This is exactly the problem: nowadays, pretty much everyone needs to have a computer, and most people don’t know how to fix it when it breaks, and every person who has a computer will experience problems. I personally find this really exasperating. I kind of half understand computers and half don’t, and I don’t understand them well enough to fix them when they break (either hardware- or software-wise). I know it must be annoying to you that ‘people can be so inadept with a tool they rely on daily,’ but it’s even more aggravating to be someone who relies on them every day and doesn’t understand how to fix them.
I feel like it’s more of a racing car pilot fixing your broken engine situation. Or asking for a pianist to fix your piano. We programmers are trained to do awesome things with the computer, but not the computers themselves.
I work in QA, and this is the best description of programmers I’ve heard. People in the non-IT part of our office just don’t understand why they can’t just ask any one in our department to fix their computers.
Ah, this reminds me of when I dated this computer science major, who said that they “don’t get down there and deal with the hardware.” Cue innuendo… Seriously though, my brother’s a programmer and he can fix computers though. Must just be an extra skill he knows.
interesting…when I mention that I’m an application developer the first thing they ask me is if I can program a mod for a specific game. Or just could code a game.
about the fixing computer thing: use google, that’s what we are doing, too.
Then they ask me if I can make a virus, then a dialog with their name on it, and finally they ask if I can teach them “how to make all that cool stuff or just something to annoy people with.”
Oh, and I forgot, then they ask me to hack some flash game, esp. Angry Birds, for them (which I actually find somewhat entertaining to do: just download embedded swf, decompress, edit, and reconstruct).
To me, I’m starting to get the “I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.”
feeling when my mother doesn’t know she can press ESC to exit windows slideshow. ( while being praised for pressing a button )
In addition, if it’s not broken hardware, standard programmers should be able to fix a moderate problem… Or take the easy way out and reformat + install operating system, hell even system restore will work 80% of the time.
Couple that with google, and you might as well made the operating system.
Well in fairness we are good at fixing stuff. I sometimes wonder how people can be so inadept with a tool they rely on daily.

In fact, when I tell them I’m a programmer they shout out loud “CAN YOU MAKE MAH COMPUTER FAZTER?????”.
What I hate are people who are extremely paranoid about viruses… But don’t know how to install an antivirus.
THIS^
I LOVE those people
So they repeat your job to themselves? Are they little children or mental defectives?
so does this mean you can fix my broken laptop or not?
Can a plumber wash your dishes? Can an engineer change a light bulb for you?
Yes?
Actually, no. They can’t.
Yes they probably can, they just probably won’t.
can’t tell if stupid or anti-joke chicken
In all fairness, most people can do those things.

Obviously they can. And any half-decent programmer can fix routine computer problems.
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I told them I was taking the degree for computer programming they gave two PSPs to fix.
WTF dudes?
Story of my life.
and it’s my future.
I understand. I study electronics engineering, and all the time I get requests to repair stuff.
What they ask:
“Can you fix my comp-”
NO.
-person keeps pestering me-
Fine, just STFU
When I can’t fix it:
“You broke it, so you pay for it.”
NO.
I think “IT, have you tried turning it off and on again?”
Same thing if you ask a car designer to fix your broken lawn-mower.

Awwww this makes me so happy!I got in the department of informatics at the university!!!!i know that no one cares but i’m so proud!!!
My thoughts:
Pascal, C, Basic… What language do you use?
