i realize that i’m probably the only one on earth that watches fox soccer channel, but it is ESPECIALLY bad on that channel. the commercials are a good 20 notches above the program. i can’t figure out if fox just has their volume really low or if the commercials are just really high, but the discrepancy is so incredible.
One of the first things a sound editor learns is normalizing sound levels. *Any* discrepancy in sound levels you hear is the result of the channel’s decision to make commercials louder, so that the audience can hear it while (in the case of a soccer channel) they’re getting another beer or making room for it in the ol’ bladder.
Oh, and then there are movies with REALLY LOUD action scenes and parts with REALLY LOUD music, but the dialog is whisper-quiet. My volume button gets lots of exercise with those…
there are actuall channels like that, i was on a vacation in florida, and there was this one channel, i forgot what it was… but it was exactly like that.
I remember a tv that used to advertise that it AUTOMATICALLY adjusted the sound so that commercials didnt blast you to hell…guess the networks KILLED that
The FCC has a maximum decibel level that television can broadcast at. While most tv shows never reach that level, commercials are shot at that that level.
There is also this paradox
Family is making too much noise -> Can’t hear the TV -> Turn volume of TV up -> Family is making more noise
Then the dishwasher starts…
Yeh but you can always tell your family to STFU!!!
That’s why I just mute the sound when commercials start.
me too
Thank you to George Carlin for that btw ^
Well now this comment is useless, I had posted the advertisement lullaby from George Carlin. Look it up yourself I guess.
