    > implying the shadow would be a perfect circle and not an oval, according to the light-refraction physical rules

    • Geronimo says:

As effectively demonstrated by Peter Pan and his shadow, and their mounting shadow-orthopedic bills. Poor shadow goes through so much just so he can look like Peter…

    • keithybabes says:

Smartarse fail. A horizontal circular surface would cast a circular shadow on a horizontal plane regardless of the incident angle of the sun. However the pole’s shadow would vary in length, because the pole is vertical.

      • Truth says:

I’m sorry, but your information is incorrect.

The top of the umbrella would not produce a perfectly circular shadow regardless of the angle of incident… Also, to say that a umbrella top is a “purely horizontal” surface, is pure idiocy. Nothing that can cast a shadow is purely 2-dimensional.

        • Ethan says:

Yor information is correct, Truth, but none of you forgot to factor in the cat.

Obviously the cat is better than you, being able to find shade, whereas you couldnt. The cat also has close relations to Chuck Norris, who (everyone knows) can bend shadows with a round-house kick. The cat did not like the shape of an oval, so he paid Chuck Norris $20 to change it to a circle

This graph is the finished product.

          Yes, I’m on weed.

        • keithybabes says:

Fvck me, you’re a pedantic bastard. Look at the picture. The umbrella in the picture is a circle. If it makes you happy, let’s imagine then that either it’s a cone in 3d or a shallow dome. Strangely enough I DO know that a real umbrella doesn’t look like that. They usually have pointy bits sticking out for a start. Anyway, providing the angle of incidence of the sun is higher than the slope of the cone or the tangent to the dome then the shadow will remain circular. It will not be an oval. Sheesh!

          • dghffdg says:

Well I guess only a sphere can cast a perfectly circle shadow.

But I mean really who cares… this is just a diagram.

            • dghffdg says:

I just figured something… the reason we think in 2D when we’re drawing on a paper is because well… the paper is 2D. But if we could somehow draw on a 3D surface, then wouldn’t we naturally draw in 3D?

              • keithybabes says:

Strangely enough a sphere only casts a circular shadow on a plane perpendicular to the sun’s rays..I spend a lot of my time drawing and rendering in 3D, using CAD software. I’ve spent a lot of time in the past drawing in 2D on a drawing board, and the study of shadows (skiagraphy/sciagraphy) was necessary for architectural rendering. I didn’t want to get all nerdy about it until Truth butted in.

                • skittledog says:

…yet nobody is worried about the perfectly circular plan area of the cat? I think someone has been fed too many treats.

                  • tereglith says:

Don’t you own a cat? They’re perfectly capable of curling up so tightly while asleep that they become perfect furry circles. That’s why cat’s aren’t very popular in Russia – people always mistake them for hats.

    • Sam says:

      thx (smartass)

Patio umbrellas are adjustable. So are most patio chairs.

Best graph (or whatever) in months.

  7. Aayin says:

    Astute observation with the cat.

The addition of “Cat” totally makes this graph for me. :)

  10. Catbytes says:

this is a cat win :)

  11. Steve says:

Best graph in months. Glad to see that someone still knows how to be original around here.

  12. keshet says:

The cat does not see a problem with this situation.

  13. kyasarin says:

You forgot the pigeon (or other diuretic bird) perched right on the edge over your head.

  14. ProfessorE says:

This chart could be an exact map of a party I was just at. Including the cat. Hi-larious!

  15. Luke says:

Why not move the umbrella so that the shade is over the table? Hurr durr. ;)

  16. Sassy says:

    it’s a cartoon, not a diagram.
