Not owning a majority of the stakes doesn’t mean that you don’t have the largest stake in the company. This means that the most influential member of the board is the UK. The US isn’t far behind though and let’s face it, ever since George-Tony duo it’s not a huge leap from US to UK in the view of the international community. Both countries are run by idiots and are equally inferior so let’s stop fighting over which one is worse.

Go outside and play or something instead of lining up to give your two-cents on a topic most of you know too little about, or honestly probably dont even care too terribly much about. How do you suppose that Brits are any better than Americans? We are all one people. Geography doesn’t make any one person or nation (and they are a nation) better than another, nor money, nor skin color. Just because the company was once British Petroleum, doesn’t mean we can blame them now. It’s an international company, meaning every nation involved may share he blame. So, i say right on Britain! and thank you for fish and chips, Harry Potter, and the use of “bloody” as a curse word.

It’s a human error brought about by human failings. I fail to see how being British, American or any nationality would have prevented the spill from occuring if those concerned were incompetant enough anyway. BP is a private company, so by all means blame the company and the owners (whatever nationality), I’d be pretty pissed off if a private company had ruined an eco system just off Dover but don’t have a go at Britain simply because the it’s part of the company’s name. Just see the event for what it is and work towards cleaning it up and learning from the mistakes, instead of hurling insults at each other.

@American: First of all, pick up a dictionairy and discover what the word “American” means.
Secondly, no one here is saying that just by saying “American”, that EXCLUDES everyone else that is not a straight out born white-American; their just saying whoever LIVES in the US, is American. This can be anyone from white, to dark skin to the wonderful Mexicans that live here as well (and yes, most of my friends are the later two).

So stop trying to stand on a soap-box and give a load proclamation before reading the messages before yours and THINKING about them first… In the US, EVERYONE living here is considered “American”; just so long as you actually live here.

And I agree with JP, i’m leaving to let you fools enjoy your squabbling; I’m off to be a better person than either of you wil ever be apparently.

Just to clear things up (unlike BP) you’re all idiots…

England is a country in Britain… If Britain is majority owner then yes technically its our fault, but i don’t see anyone pointing the finger at whoever was in charge of the ship…. as for the discussion of KFC that ensued from one persons comment about the origins of company names, what a pointless waste of time and energy that was.

This board could have been so much simpler with just a “lol” at the pie chart and maybe a “that is so true”

First of all, we are Americans, maybe not the only Americans, none the less still American. We never claimed to own the whole continent and we can’t really call ourselves United Statians, doesn’t sound right. Second, you are reading into this all wrong. It is not about blame at all, its about fixing the problem. You are right, it IS having a huge impact on our Earth, therefore it will take an immense amount of money, time, effort and manpower to even attempt to clean up this mess. The problem is all of these things are valuable commodities that companies, nations, and all sorts of organizations are going to have to give away to the effort. People are just trying to figure who is responsible for what. I wish we could do the whole hippie humans save the Earth thing, but unfortunately we are all human, so the world will never work like that.

Except there is public record and company reports showing BP consistently cutting cost by sacrificing rig safety to well below their policy standards. It wasn’t an “act of God” or random accident, it was a preventable fault. They have tape of a rig foreman screaming at superior that he had told them this would happen and they ignored the risk (http://billionaires.forbes.com/quote/0fd4cdwgesekZ?q=BP+p.l.c.)

BP gambled with cheaping out on safety, and they lost. They must now pay the cost of fixing the spill. They should also be held accountable for the pensions. Every executive that is found to be on record for having approved the cuts that led to the spill should be fined until all the money they owe is paid. I hope they cap the spill before even oil executives can’t cover the cost
