guys it’s just a joke, calm down. it’s actually really funny, I’m an Asian living in Australia and I must say that it IS pretty annoying when the tech support people are all Indian =P but then again it’s not because I can’t use a computer, or that THEY can’t, I mean, hell, the guy who BUILT my computer was Indian, so just have a laugh and get over it. Wonder if my Brazilian friends in China can fix the computers?

Regarding your comment about the map itself: as mentioned above, it’s a Mercator projection. It happens to be the most popular, probably because it makes for a nice, rectangle-shaped map. Unfortunately, that means that the closer something is to one of the poles, the more it has to be stretched, to make it so that each line of latitude is the same length as the equator.

Exactly. Imagine the earth like an orange… and you make a cut on one side and take the peel off so it looks like pacman. To lay it flat on a table, you have to make cuts in the top and bottom, which leaves gaps (like this http://www.kidsgeo.com/images/interrupted-map-projection.gif). However, this is OBVIOUSLY not a rectangle, so map projections like Mercator stretch it into a rectangle. I kinda lol’ed at this because there is a KERNEL of truth in it (haha). I’m American, and I have pretty in-depth knowledge of computer troubleshooting and theory, but on several occasions (primarily due to warrantied items for family members) I’ve had to call up tech support. Generally speaking, probably 90% of the people I have spoken to are Indian. Out of that 90%, probably about 60% of them spoke wonderful English and were able to easily help me with my problem. The other forty percent…. well, they were pretty useless, and wasted hours upon hours of my life. So yeah, the guy who made this graph doesn’t have a real clue about what countries have computer backgrounds (US internet is terribly slow, and most Americans have ZERO clue how computers work…) but I thought it was still funny because most tech support is in underdeveloped countries where labor is cheapest, not where strong computer skills are. TL,DR; Yeah, the graph’s stupid, but it’s still pretty funny that the people you call for tech support often have way less knowledge than us internet people.

I think it’s safe to say that countries that have many people who can afford and buy a computer (and most of the people in these countries do) know how to use a computer. Sorry if poverty stricken people don’t know how to use a computer.

Because it’s a Mercator projection, which attempts to take a sphere and stretch it into a rectangle. As a result, the closer a landmass is to one of the poles (where the stretching is infinite, as a single point is made to be as long as the equator), the larger it appears to be.

Another South African here who ‘solves computer problems’ for a living so I call bull**** on this one. Yes I’ve lived and worked in the ‘blue’ area, but now do the same work from South Africa because I prefer it.

I would have found this more funny if SA was in blue, but then again so many people don’t realise it is a country or where it is on the map. Hopefully the World Cup at the moment will clear this up

More and more European companies are doing business with South Africa because we are in the same time zone.

Whoever made this assumes that every single country in Europe is some kind of perfect economic utopia, which is not true. Europe is NOT a land of magical living conditions, first of all. Prosperity in Germany doesn’t necessarily compare to the conditions in, say, Bosnia or Albania or Belarus, all of which are still suffering from the repercussions of decades of Soviet incompetence.

But even that doesn’t really mean anything. Although billions of people don’t have direct ownership of a computer, they still can use them at internet cafes.

Even though so many have access to computers, that still doesn’t matter because even in the developed countries that supposedly “have people who know how to fix their computer problems” are still full of morons who have no idea how to do more than open microsoft word, let alone set up a printer. Anything more complicated is incomprehensible.

I don’t really think whoever made this graph was actually racist, but misinformed… no … a total idiot who knows little about the world outside of the average americentric viewpoint of the average American. The Black Sea is no longer inhabitable, Europe is not a magical land full of stereotypical affluent/intelligent people, and there are intelligent people who live outside of the U.S. satellites; they’re actually not savages to be visited sporadically for community service trips, kicks, and giggles. Shocking, isn’t it?

But, yeah outsourcing sucks too. Being put on hold only to have an unintelligible conversation with someone 10000 miles away who can barely understand you, and you can barely decipher their accent is *insert dripping sarcasm here* totally my idea of a good time. Oh, but that makes me a racist now…. I guess… you know, as opposed to be wanting decent customer support and to be treated like a human being.

The Philippines has many computer-literate people and the country is left out in this graph. Majority of people born from 1970 and up know how to use and troubleshoot computers. Unfortunately, our politicians are on the far end of the spectrum — and is dragging everyone down with their stupidity.

People get so offended so easily. Laaaaaaaame. Most the people here on both sides of all the arguments don’t even know what they’re talking about and are hiding behind their own pre-conceived notions of the world. I agree the graph could have had more thought put into it, but this is graph jam — not an actual news or educational site with any kind of funded research department. Everyone from all countries: do you actually know how computer literate your country is? Do you know how computer literate EVERY other country is? People saying ‘it doesn’t matter’ – I think with very little effort, the graph maker could have looked at this himself and realized it would come off a little racist. Why not use lighter and darker shades of blue or reword the titles a little? Give us something.
But that all said, you all get offended WAY too easily. I don’t think there’s any malicious intent, and I don’t think anyone’s going to use this graph in their doctorate as PROOF that country X can’t use computers. People dumb enough to take this graph at face-value probably … don’t know how to use a computer … Hey!
