Lady GaGa has taken over radio airwaves, music video channels, magazine covers, and a good portion of the Cheezburger Network’s websites. It was only a matter of time before she burst onto the GraphJam scene to shake things up. And so here she is, in all of her controversial glory, the essence of a pop star’s meteoric (15 minutes of) fame distilled in 3 graphs.

Can someone please explain to me this phenomenon of listening to a song you have stuck in your head to try and get it out? Why do people think this works? You don’t think ‘hmm, I’m drunk – I’ll have another beer to sober up!’
What do you mean why do they think it works..they do it because it does work.
Pootah-
When you have a song stuck in your head, it is very likely because your brain can’t finish it. It plays it over and over because it has the lyrics wrong, or it doesn’t know the rest of them.
Once you play a song through (I have to read lyrics at the same time) you should have eradicated the song. Like your brain is skipping and you need to set the needle straight- only that entails educating your brain with the correct lyric set.
You don’t actually have a clue about this do you?
actually, tis true. If I hear a crappy song on the radio, and change it, I’ll have it stuck in my head all day. I have to listen to it(most likely sing along) for it to get out of my head.
This is supposed to be a joke… You’re reading this with more seriousness than you really should. Relax… have a beer!
You know how some things just work? THAT’S why.
If you hate the song, it’s unlikely to happen, though. I’d never listen to Poker Face to get it out of my head because I don’t like it, and at the time it was being played pretty much anywhere anyway.
Anyone that says they listen to a song they hate to get it out of their head… they are probably lying and it’s their “guilty pleasure” song!
Terrible analogy haha that was totally irrelivant. If you hear the song you will stop trying to play it back in your head because your heard it and you now know what it was your brain was trying to create. This always works for me.
If you’re *really* drunk you might…
People who don’t actually care about music, listens to this kind of shit. And the sad thing is that it seems to be a huge load of this people. I like to compare artists like this with plastic forks(designed to use only once and throw away.) The only reason she is popular is because mainstream-radio decided to make her popular by playing her stupid songs over and over and over until it gets stuck in our heads. In a few months radio has, probably, given up on her and there will be a new tormenting artist with stupid songs that sound exactly the same over and over again. (and don’t tell me that I DON’T HAVE to listen to those radiostations because I DON’T, but there is always someone around, for example, in public with a _insert shitty mobilephone, with shitty loudspeaker_ playing this songs so you can’t actually choose not to listen to this kind of SHIT without walking around with goddamn earplugs) Not an answer on previous comment but, there it is folks.
Just so you know, Lady GaGa is not one of those contrived artists that is just ALL image and has producers make her music for her. She is involved in every aspect of her music. She writes all her own lyrics and melodies, and is incredibly talented. She does not lip sync at all. You may not enjoy the lyrics to her songs, but she has amazing ability and the quality of her MUSIC is fantastic. The graph about “subtlety” really irked me. Who’s to say she has to be subtle? I know you’re not going to take the time to do it because you really don’t care that much, but if you actually watched interviews with her, you would see she has strong, decent views and philosophies. She’s an empowering woman, and you should do research about any subject you are opposed to just to make sure you get each side and don’t end up looking like an ignorant music snob.
I agree 100%. Who needs subtlety? The music industry has enough generic music icons, it’s about time someone like Gaga showed up and gave it a breath of fresh air and a kick to the groin.
For God sakes, even the legendary sir Elton John wanted to duet with her. The woman is obviously nothing short of an icon.
And she wears scotch tape and glitter.
Her music just adds on to the generic “pop culture music” fad.
I’ve heard it. It’s nothing special or unique.
Re subtlety: there’s nothing saying the person who made the graph disliked her. It might be meant as “Oh you unsubtle thing you, Gaga.”
A lot of music today is no-talent stuff, but if she writes her own stuff, that’s cool. I really dislike her songs, myself, but I’m big enough to accept that there’s a lot of rubbish in genres I enjoy, too (rock, electronica). Just because you dislike something doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have talent.
And to all the fans of Lady Gaga complaining that people don’t understand the lyrics? Sorry to burst your bubble, but if you don’t like the music, understanding the lyrics is not going to make a gigantic difference to someone’s preference!
you’re my new favorite person
you go girl!!!!!!
Well, said, the research you must of done on Lady GaGa really shows. Go listen to an acoustic version of Poker Face, she has talent. When done listening think which music would make money and so what the released stuff is pandering to the masses I still enjoy it and yes trends will change, the spotlight will move to the next artist. The main thing is she made money off doing something she obviously enjoys, so good for her. You’re right music goes thru stages like that always has always will.
Also to get songs out of your head the best way is to think of smoke on the water.
As for Lady Gaga’s abilities, I don’t really care for her style but I can still recognize that she’s enormously talented as a musician, dancer, choreographer, and designer. I think the graph author mistakenly thinks that reaction against something that’s popular will automatically be accepted as truth.
I agree on her probably being a very talented person indeed, I’ve heard her concerts are very energetic and such, but personally, I dislike her songs and wouldn’t go for her concert even if it was free and I’d get a ride there.
Okay, about that last graph… if you`re talking about her first album, The Fame, I agree almost completely, but the second album is so much better.
And if you watch her interviews, you can see that her abilities in being a lady are genius. As well as her piano & singing skills.
I don’t give a shit about whether or not she has a good voice, her songs are hideous. The Fame Monster has twice the sexual references that for some reason get played at indoor playgrounds for kids, and is repetitive and tiresome.
If you hate Lady Gaga, do you really need to share it with the world? She’s got style okay. And she can hold her own at concerts, even though she edits her voice on the CD’s and iTunes. She’s pretty, has a nice voice, is an execellent pianist, and is succesful. Even if you’re talking about how crazy she is, you’re still talking about her, therefore, she is somebody worth attention. So stop hatin her. You just think you’re superior for reasons unkown. Lady Gaga is going to end up like Van Gogh: most famous after death.
Note, sweetcheeks.
Attention does not mean “praise”.
And no, we will not stop hating. It’s called freedom of speech, which has sort of lost it’s meaning since gays have been ripped of their right to marry.
But I digress.
Speech, yes. Hate, no.
Everyone has the right for their opinions, like hatred or admiration. But people don’t have the rights to do things that are unfair or illegal towards those who they hate.
*shrugs* We can all exercise our right to disagree with each other though, can’t we? That’s the beauty of the First Amendment. Seeing as neither the haters nor the lovers have gotten to the point of death threats, I think we can safely say we can continue the debate
.
Your absolutely right, she is worth attention, and she is getting it in this graph. The way she acts and dresses in her performances screams for criticism like this, so don’t be upset when people react the way she is prodding them to. Even if you think she is the greatest specimen of “womanhood” since Britney Spears shaved her head.
“Lady Gaga is going to end up like Van Gogh: most famous after death.”
I can only pray that moment happens sooner rather than later.
Wow, wishing for someone’s death, someone you don’t even know, just because you simply don’t like their craft?
Doesn’t that sound even the teensiest bit psychotic to any of you?
Or cutting her ear, depending on how you see it.
If you actually read the lyrics, her music DOES make sense.
It’s just not mainstream OMGILOVEYOUFOREVERANDEVER.
No, instead it’s “GAGAOOLALARAHRAHRAHRAH x200*
Talent, clearly.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, honey…..
Oh wait… that must not be good music according to you as well?
I’m afraid of the segment of the population that finds deeper meaning in her music. We should probably quarantine them for our own safety and mental health.
probably the same segment that thinks Moon Over Marin was a romantic song about the beach. Yes I know people who think that.
I suppose you’ve never actually listened to her songs, then.
Exactly! It might seem like a song about going out to a club at first but usually that’s nothing close to what it truly means.
Exactly. Her songs are about real things, none of them are “yeah, and then we fckedddd after we met in this clubbbb.”
People need to do some research before they bash extremely talented artists..
wtf is you’r?
“you’r” is probably the single worst piece of punctuation that I’ve seen so far this year.
you’r is a word? It’s YUR!
Well, it’s actually “your”.
Stop double posting!
you’r is a word? It’s YUR! I mean, your.
If a song is stuck in your head, just listen to loud music you DO like untill it’s out. Works for me.
Lady Gaga is mainstream and so is UNTALENTED and RUBBISH!!!!1! Anyone who actually likes her is a CONFORMIST MORONNNNNN! Because I am the only one in the world who thinks like this because I am such a unique special snowflake!! LOOK HOW CLEVER AND DIFFERENT I AM BY NOT LIKING HER!!!
/end rant
/end delurking
and who exactly do you like ms unique?
*snickers* I see what you did there. Also people who don’t understand sarcasm suck.
Tis a fun thing, sarcasm.
Maybe you should try reading the lyrics to any of the songs on The Fame Monster. If you can’t see the deeper meaning, I am sorry. She’s extremely talented.
I am intriqued. Please tell me kind sir what the deeper philosophical meaning to the following phrase from Lady Gaga’s masterpiece “Bad Romance” is: “RAH, RAH RAH-RAH-RAH. Gaga OOLAH-LAAH!”
You’re so F-ing right… if a song has even a SINGLE nonsensical sound it it, it’s rubbish.
Now excuse me while I got listen to some Beatles music…
“Sitting here la la
Waiting for my ya ya
Sitting here la la
Waiting for my ya ya”….
That isn’t a Beatles song.
Sarcasm, m’dear.
I regard her music, though very catchy, rather mediocre, and (as a bisexual) I resent her (possible unintentional) comments about bisexuality. That being said, I can understand why people like her, and I take it that she’s actually very courteous and nice to her fans in real life, which I very much applaud. So… I guess i’m rather lukewarm about her?
I do, however, like Johnny Weir’s take on her Poker Face XDDDDDDD.
All I can say is ENOUGH. I’m tired of her. I’m sure more than half of the website lurkers agree. Keep it on Roflrazzi, people!
I used to buy in to the “oh she’s mainstream and therefore sucks” and I still don’t personally like her music, but i would still rather listen to her than a lot of popstars, because the worst thing music can be is boring, and that is the last word I would use to describe her. So, yes she is never subtle in any way, and she is definitely crazy, but crazy people make the best music.
you’r…. wow, that type of grammar represents someone that would probably listen to lady gaga. I mean I’ve seen people use you’re and your the wrong way multiple times but this is a new one.
Don’t judge… they could be listening to classical for all you know. It shocks me when people are judged by the way they type.
Typo maybe?
Aaaaand Lady Gaga is laughing all the way to the bank. She writes all her own music and designs all of her own costumes. How many of us can do that?
Thank youu.
You’r? Really?
True, but at least lady gaga writes all of her own music, unlike beyonce!
There are plenty of worse artists you can pick on :/ And I like Lady GaGa
lmao. look at all the lady gaga fans.
i only listened to the filks and versions with the words change of pokerface
Her songs are actually pretty good, when you take away the vocals and listen to the instrumentals. Paparazzi, for example.
Rah rah rah a ah, roma roma ma gaga oh la la
Totally go lesbian for Miss Gaga <3
God dammit! I read this and then went out to kitchen to get myself a slice of pizza and caught myself singing Pokerface.
When it is acceptable to use the word “you’r” : never.
And Lady Gaga’s songs are never about guys she meets in clubs, so shut up please.
You forgot “cherry cherry boom boom”
“Being a lady?” ‘Cause she ain’t in the kitchun whar she buhlongss?
Use proper grammar. I HATE it when people speak in Ebonics.
And I DISLIKE it when people fail to get jokes/sarcasm and instead slam the person who posted.
I think that in the “when it is acceptable” pie chart, there should be a little sliver for “when you want to remember what Poker Face sounded like before Little Kuriboh made it awesome with Brooklyn Rage.”
When is it acceptable to use you’r(e) instead of your, oh wait! NEVER!
Next time on Graphjam: Lady GaGa graphs made by people who know more of Lady GaGa than just Poker Face, Just Dance & what their internet friends told them!
Seriously, like what you like, but when you criticise people with generalizations that don’t even match them, you just sound lazy and cynical.
Poker Face is about pretending to enjoy being with as guy when really you want a girl. Just Dance is (maybe) about just having fun (remember that? before nigh ALL your music had to decry cynicism and the evils of the world?). Dance in the Dark is a song that hits me pretty hard. Its the one she played at the Brits, that everyone moaned that ‘nobody knew’.
Teeth is pretty kinky. And Again Again is a damn fine soulful song.
BRB, listening to Behemoth.
when poker face is stuck in ‘you’r’ head.
WHAT THE HELL? PLEASE RECONSIDER GRAMMAR.
While I despise pop, rap, and R&B as a whole, the vast majority of hard rock is sexual referencing and talking about some chick they met in a club. Same goes for thrash metal, my preferred genre, except replace sexual reference with the end of the world, and talking about some chick with death, and add war to that while you’re at it. Then to spice it up, there’s the “WIMPS AND POSERS, LEAVE THE HALL!” song.
I enjoy the hell out of Lady GaGa as a musician, choreographer, designer, and songwriter. She’s essentially a musical prodigy (seriously – she was at The Juilliard School for piano at age 12) who figured out Fame, and then spat it back out for public consumption. Her entire image is dedicated to mocking generic pop (see: that song where the chick “wakes up feeling like P Diddy”).
Not only that but as far as dance music goes, the actual music is well composed, works well together melodically, and is catchy as hell. The lyrics, if listened to with a critical ear are remarkably deep. Hell, “Just Dance” is a song about being so trashed you have no idea where you are or what you’re doing and just keep moving and you’ll be okay. Most people hate to admit it but they’ve been there. I love the GaGa
RE: When it is Acceptable to Listen to Lady Gaga – I’d say it’s totally fine to watch the “Pokerface” music video to see her in that little blue number.
Also, we must admit that:
1. The dance choreography in her videos is top-notch.
2. The overall production value is incredibly high.
And, personally as a musician, I do find her to be talented.
For sexual references, it should have taken up the whole page!
In the “Contents of Lady Gaga songs”, the green section in waaaaaaaay too wide.
