Really, it depends on where you are. I live in the Canadian prairies, and even small towns have a curling rink. When winter is 6+ months long, you need something to do! If I lived further south, I wouldn’t care too much about it either.
In Norway there’s quite a bit of interest for curling, slowly but steadily increasing. Sure, it peaks around olympics times and is kinda cyclical, but it’s not horrible during off-olympics times.
You’re not kidding! I hoped they and Canada made it to the finals just for that (the Canadians aren’t much to look at, but I’m Canadian and we want gold).
Luckly, the y-axis isn’t labeled popularity. I might have helped to have the words ‘percent of’ before non-Canadians, but there really isn’t a problem.
I enjoy curling. I always get excited to watch it on the Winter Olympics. One of my favorite events, honestly. It’s really underrated.
PS I’m from Florida ;D
I used to curl quite a bit in my youth back in, of all places, Nebraska. Loved the game but ended up living in places over the years where it wasn’t played. Have been watching a lot of it on CNBC and love the commentary and discussion of strategy, etc after having been away from the game for a while.
I really enjoy watching it; more than most winter olympic sports. The Japanese women’s team is just too freaking cute. And those Mizuno jackets kick ass!
Red vs. Blue had the right idea. “What, was ‘stupid rock push’ too long for the program?” Seriously, that doesn’t even sound all that appealing when you learn that it is not in fact people doing contortionist acts.
I was going to say “That’s not true, curling is a really popular sport all the time around here!” and then I noticed that the y-axis was ‘non-Canadians’. Eh.
Okay, I’m Canadian, there’s a curling rink in my city, and I live maybe an hour away from Vancouver and so hear about the Olympics constantly. I. HATE. CURLING! The worst part is, because it is watched in my house a lot so I understand it slightly now. Sigh. How is that annoying yelling match a sport? And I don’t care if I get hate for saying this. *is shot*
Hate to tell ya this, but curling wasn’t created in Canada. Try Scotland. They love them some curling too. And it’s actually pretty fun. Especially for us Canadians who can’t skate.
As a northern Canadian, who’s family is from Newfoundland, I love curling. Its actually a big thing in my house, but then again we do have 6 months of winter and not much to do.
My husband plays in a curling league. We live in Ohio. And no, neither of us are Canadian nor have ever lived there. We love curling, but a lot of people ask my husband “wtf is curling?” when he tells them that’s his hobby. It’s sad, really, because it’s an interesting game!
Ok, I’m just going to say it – I think curling should not be an Olympic game. The reason is that it’s not an actual sport – it would be like considering bowling or shuffleboard to be sports. They’re activities, not sports. Yes, many of you enjoy it, and I’m not trying to say anything bad about it, but it’s simply not a sport and the Olympics is meant for sports.
Bowling is a sport…. Sport does not mean “physically demanding”. By that logic you may as well wipe out diving events in the summer games since there’s no breaking sweat, just accuracy and finesse.
If Curling gets to be an olympic sport, Skydiving should be too. At least swooping. It’s extremely entertaining, and you can watch the action from the ground. I mean, you can watch the stuff that 4-way teams do and free flying and freestyle flying etc… from the ground, but it’s really really really small. But Canopy Piloting certainly should be an event.
As ZZZB pointed out, curling is Scots. To our everlasting embarrassment, George Lazenby plays it during On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Thankfully, I couldn’t find a clip.
The title of the graph is misleading, since the entire Y-axis consists of America (at least, that seems to be the intention of the OP).
It’s a fun sport that requires strength and accuracy, it’s inclusive, and it provides a great deal more camaraderie than oh say skiing or skating or hockey. Get on iTunes, look for CBC podcasts (they’re free) and look up “Vinyl Cafe” with Stuart McLean. The February 6th podcast describes Stuart’s introduction to curling. It’s very WAFFy
Curling! Curling! (Canadian here, who really enjoys watching the curling. Especially the Canada-Great Britain match last weekend. A nail-biter to the end)
The curling rink here was a ghost town for a long time. Then, Canada won an Olympic Medal in it. The place was booming, for about three months. Then it was a ghost town again.
Curling is pretty awesome, I wish it were more popular. Also responding to earlier comments, it is definitely as much of a sport as baseball or golf, and I agree that swooping, if that is what it is called, should be an olympic sport too, it would be really awesome.
Im First to say I LOVE CURLING!!!!!
I agree…..Curling is frikin awesom!! If only they showed it on TV more than just on the olympics.
I don’t even know what Curling is.
It’s bowling for him and sweeping for her, with the fun little addition of ice.
that’s what she said?
Really, it depends on where you are. I live in the Canadian prairies, and even small towns have a curling rink. When winter is 6+ months long, you need something to do! If I lived further south, I wouldn’t care too much about it either.
That explains a lot. I live in Brazil and I’ve never heard of that! hahaha
Don’t forget that the entire British women’s curling team is from Scotland, and we do care a bit for curling.
In Norway there’s quite a bit of interest for curling, slowly but steadily increasing. Sure, it peaks around olympics times and is kinda cyclical, but it’s not horrible during off-olympics times.
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha the trousers.
On behalf of the world, may I say thank you.
I like curling. I used to play, and I was at Olympic curling on Monday night.
That said – funny graph. You might enjoy Letterman’s recent Top 10 list on the topic. It’s on youtube.
The Danes are hot. At least the female ones.
You’re not kidding! I hoped they and Canada made it to the finals just for that (the Canadians aren’t much to look at, but I’m Canadian and we want gold).
From a scientific point of view, how does presenting this in percentage make any sense? how can something be “100% popular”?
Luckly, the y-axis isn’t labeled popularity. I might have helped to have the words ‘percent of’ before non-Canadians, but there really isn’t a problem.
It*
I would think that oxygen is 100% popular amongst humans.
And everyone likes food, don’t they?
Wait…
Never mind, just remembered Keira Knightley.
I enjoy curling. I always get excited to watch it on the Winter Olympics. One of my favorite events, honestly. It’s really underrated.

sounds like a cold weather sport… I’ll keep my 70+ degree winter days here in Phoenix…
My friend played curling with a group when I lived in Dallas
curling is awesome!
I really enjoy watching it; more than most winter olympic sports. The Japanese women’s team is just too freaking cute. And those Mizuno jackets kick ass!

The part on “during the Olympics” should be higher, much higher
There should be a part marked, “When the Norwegians are wearing crazy pants” that would be even higher than that.
….wtf is curling? O_o
I love Curling, I watch it everyday during the Olympics!!!!!!! Wish it was more popular here in the States
Hate to tell ya this, but curling wasn’t created in Canada. Try Scotland. They love them some curling too. And it’s actually pretty fun. Especially for us Canadians who can’t skate.

I’m gonna need more Curling!
I never heard of Curling before the 2010 Olympics…
Ok, I’m just going to say it – I think curling should not be an Olympic game. The reason is that it’s not an actual sport – it would be like considering bowling or shuffleboard to be sports. It’s a hell of a lot of exercise. YOu should try it sometime. You’ll never find a fat curler.
If Curling gets to be an olympic sport, Skydiving should be too. At least swooping. It’s extremely entertaining, and you can watch the action from the ground. Its sad that curling is a sport. Its double sad that its an Olympic sport.
It’s sad that curling being a sport makes you sad. It certainly compares to other pointless, boring sports such as Baseball and Golf.
Golf isn’t a sport.
i freaking love curling.
it’s like bocce ball on ice.
with brooms.
also – please don’t make a new graph about bocce ball’s popularity now.
People watch it for the competition?
I’m too busy noticing the 1-2 hot chicks per team and listening to their excited screams.
I LOVE curling!
If the Olympics has made curling a winter sport,
they blow drying should be too.
THEN! ‘Then blow drying should be, too.’
Scheesh.
I agree 100%, but then, blow drying should be an Olympic sport anyways.
As ZZZB pointed out, curling is Scots. To our everlasting embarrassment, George Lazenby plays it during On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Thankfully, I couldn’t find a clip.
“Men with Brooms” (tt0263734) is good.

This graph only applies to the US because there’s, what, 8 people in your whole country who actually understand how it’s played?
Curling’s awesome!
Madeleine Dupont. That’s all i have to say on the matter.
Curling! Curling! (Canadian here, who really enjoys watching the curling. Especially the Canada-Great Britain match last weekend. A nail-biter to the end)
Wait, this graph means ~500 million people actually care about curling during the Olympics?
I doubt that many people even care about the winter olympics.
It’s still more interesting to watch than Baseball…
The curling rink here was a ghost town for a long time. Then, Canada won an Olympic Medal in it. The place was booming, for about three months. Then it was a ghost town again.
are you sure the popularity rises that much?
I also love curling… and slightly dislike the person that created this graph…
dude curling is the bomb. American here. Watched most of the curling over the Olympics.
I looked at the graph and said indignantly, “Curling is way more popular than THAT!” Then I read the label on the y-axis. I’m Canadian. Point taken.
i really enjoyed curling, wish they had a rink here in england, then i could start playing again.
Curling is pretty awesome, I wish it were more popular. Also responding to earlier comments, it is definitely as much of a sport as baseball or golf, and I agree that swooping, if that is what it is called, should be an olympic sport too, it would be really awesome.
curling is bowels but on ice with mops
Not even Canadians, man.
I think the rise is too high.
