Please, if you think words go in and out of style you are probably just a little too old to understand. Its actually very FRESH these days to borrow the language of every generation whether for comic relief, to accentuate a point, for lack of a better word, a cheesy pun, hilarious wordsmithery etc. Don't be a word snob. Maybe you should attack is his content versus the terms he used to convey a point. I just turned 20 and I say hip from time to time. Maybe I'm just one of those word losers who doesn't know how to talk in style.

Its your responsibility as an individual not to be needlessly wasteful or destructive. You don't need recognition. You should just do it. You shouldn't drive a prius just because you think its the most "eco" freindly option out there and will somehow be recognized as green. Do your research and consider a diesel car too(which are now as "green" as a gas car and far more fuel efficient). Every American (including myself), no matter how "green", pollutes tremendously when compared to other nations. I don't care if your car gets 40 mpg. Its the nature of everything about the modernized lifestyle. Not to mention the fact that global warming has been so highly politicized that one side of the fence has an overly acute sense of it while the other denies it completely. Both are stupid. People should learn to critically think instead of assuming they can believe everything they hear and come to a rational assessment.

ps I could be wrong but it seems like most people who drive priuses drive like 10mph over the speed limit on the freeway anyway. Which negates the electric engine operating at slow speeds. In, fact that tiny little engine is probably getting worse mileage than just a traditional compact car at that speed.

If YOU would listen to scientists, you'd realize that Global Warming is a massive scam, and the temperature fluctuations, etc. (if any) are caused by natural processes.
'Green' products ARE mostly just bought for hype. Most of them cost a lot more than other products, and do a lackluster job compared to the original products they are replacing. Some people are even affected by the 'green' products. For example, LED taillights/and traffic lights. They do not produce the heat needed to melt snow and ice, so accidents have occurred, and will continue to occur. Not to mention that the cost to purchase them is substantially higher. A few people have also gotten sick from the 'swirly' light bulbs... just a general feeling of discomfort. If I have one on too long, I start to feel a little discomfort.

And as for stuff like 'hybrids' and electric cars...

First of all, they cost so much more to make and purchase over regular cars, and get minimal gains over older vehicles (and full electric cars are useless to many people... time span is so short and charge times are insane). Secondly, electric cars run off of, get this, electricity. Where does it come from in most places? Fossil fuels. What about battery disposals?

The 'biggest' issue is global warming itself. How exactly can we tell the earth is warming, and its due to CO2? An increase of CO2 can be independent of temperature. Also, the earth has increased/decreased in overall temp several times (Ice ages?) and how can we tell that temps ARE increasing? We have only had the technology to record temps for a few decades.

If global warming was an issue, then current green products do nothing but cost the consumer, shift the energy use, and inconvenience people. In the future, this may change, but I for one will not buy a hybrid for $40 000. Ill keep my vehicles I pay $10 000 for, and get 10-20MPG. (it would take years for a hybrid to barely break even, let along be more cost effective.)

Yes, there are people who live an eco friendly lifestyle... most of them live on small farms and kill their own food.

You're never really going to SEE any green if you live in a flithy city stacked ontop of eachother in an artificial enviroment.

*Facepalm* The Internet panders to extreme conclusions and sensationalism. It also undermines credibility by forcing experts to argue with anyone who has an opinion. In fact, the Internet has almost more of a herd mentality then television. Now I'm not saying that television is superior to the Internet, I'm simply stating that both have disadvantages. The best way to get balanced information is using a variety of sources.

As for “going green”, is it necessarily a bad thing that protecting our environment has merged with popular culture?

But I think that fewer people do it out of an informed desire to save money and do good for the environment than they do it in order to be doing something that makes them feel good about themselves. There are people like you, who know what they're on about, and then there are people like a woman I work with, who wails about pollution and keeping the future clean for her children, who gives everyone a hard time at work for not separating recyclables properly, and who pollutes and litters when she thinks no one's looking. You don't save the environment by buying an environmentally friendly mini-van and then drive it around with no one else in it just because once a week you might have to take your kids somewhere.

But I think that fewer people do it out of an informed desire to save money and do good for the environment than they do it in order to be doing something that makes them feel good about themselves. There are people like you, who know what they’re on about, and then there are people like a woman I work with, who wails about pollution and keeping the future clean for her children, who gives everyone a hard time at work for not separating recyclables properly, and who pollutes and litters when she thinks no one’s looking. You don’t save the environment by buying an environmentally friendly mini-van and then drive it around with no one else in it just because once a week you might have to take your kids somewhere.

I thought at least 2/3 would say because it's more efficient/saves money.

For example 'green' PC hardware generates less heat, needs less cooling, works with more silent fans, works in general more silent. Additionally you won't hate your energy bill that much.

You can take that for nearly every 'green' product.
It's more efficient and saves your money. And i really do like products that save my money.
