Wow!!! It’s like I was reviewing pieces of my life while reading your post. It sounds like you are still stuck in Lubbock but don’t worry you do not suffer alone. I graduated with a BA in psychology cum laude in May of 2009 from Texas Tech University. As of today I am still working as a pharmacy technician which in no way utilizes the education I paid astronomical amounts for. I knew I was in trouble when the first thing out of the guest speakers mouth at my commencement ceremony was, “you guys picked a heck of a time to graduate”. At that moment sitting there with several hundred other graduates, the feeling of pride and accomplishment quickly turned into disappointment.

Months later after I received no response from the countless jobs I applied for I looked into the teacher’s certificate program. It was that very week my pharmacy hired a girl who had been a high school chemistry teacher who shared her feelings on becoming a teacher. She decided to leave teaching and take a pay cut rather than deal with an absent administration, out of control students and parents that constantly complained about everything. She also informed me of the number of applicants her school received which heavily exceeded the few positions that had become available. Many of these applicants had education specific degrees at the Masters level.

So I searched on and found an ad for probation officer and decided to apply. I showed up to the test site where I was greeted by 400 other test takers. I kid you not! I sat there and counted the number myself. Here I was sitting with 400 other people (only 15 being female counting myself) all competing for a few positions. My undergraduate degree was not even required nor did it give me a leg up.

I’ve looked into law school only to find out that the market is flooded with JD’s and many of whom are overwhelmed with debt. I’ve considered getting my Masters only to find jobs that pay $35,000 to those who have a Masters in psychology. I can’t even find a job that will pay me $35,000 now. How am I supposed to finance another $30,000+ for my Masters to only get paid $35,000.It is utterly ridiculous the hoops I have jumped through with no avail.

I have never asked nor sought anything other than an entry level position that would utilize the education I spent so much time and effort on. They do not exist. I actually found a job opening for a secretarial position that required an undergraduate degree. What have we done? When there are so many degree holders that an employer can require an undergraduate degree for a secretary position you know there is a problem. However, Texas Tech University keeps increasing their student numbers without any regard to the one’s they have just “educated”.

I'm going for a physics degree, geology side, with a bit of chemistry. Purpose being gemstone research (hopefully). With the course list I'm taking, they better declare it as geochemical physics...

But of course, who is going to want my lovely gemstones I studied so hard for, when the economy is in the crapper?

I graduated in May of 2008 with a degree in Communication Studies from Texas Tech. I was "lucky" to begin fulltime work at my former summer-job, working in a warehouse for $10 an hour. Two years later... I'm still here... and I still have no prospects.

College is the worst decision I have ever made. I'm in debt up to my eyes and have nothing to show for it. I'm performing the exact same job I did in high school, for the same child-like-wage (only I have adult bills to pay now).

After earning my degree, I began the hunt. This was right before the bank bailouts and before the recession kicked in. I can remember having conversations with friends about how I had hoped to find work in at least 4 – 6 months. The thought of it taking longer than that was something I laughed at. I never imagined it a possibility to have to struggle like I have.

I started out like everyone: searching Monster, Career Builder, Hot Jobs, etc. I landed a few interviews, but was disheartened to realize they were scams (not exaggerating). Many of the offices I visited were fly-by-night, rented offices that made attempts to “look” legit. None were. You should have seen the people that would enter the room to interview me: strung out in appearance with messy hair, blood-shot eyes and thrift-store suits. Seriously - if it wasn’t so depressing, I’d laugh. Lastly, their “pitch” was always a desperate attempt to dupe entry-level, college grads and always directed towards the assumed-naive. Oh, and I should mention that the work-for-nothing concept of “making commission” selling a product no one wants wasn’t something I was interested in either.

So, I got aggressive. I signed up with Texas Teachers to earn and receive my teaching credentials. I went through the courses and passed the exams and am now certified to teach elementary and high school Speech. Guess how many calls, job interviews and interest I’ve received: zero.

I decided I still wasn’t doing enough. I convinced myself that anything was better than nothing and I set out to try and become a police officer. I’m a smart/athletic guy and capable of passing all the requirements and exams, so I tested, passed and got a couple of call backs to interview, which I thought went well (after all, my degree is in communication). But did I land a police job? Nope. They felt I “hadn’t done enough.” So, I figured I should try to start below the pay-grade of an officer and begin in dispatch, which relates to my degree (proficient verbal skills could arguably be an asset to emergency situations). Did that idea work? No. What about jailer? I tried that, also. Did that work? Nope. I am the ultimate catch 22. I’m unqualified for most jobs due to my lack of career-experience, but I’m over qualified for jobs that I would certainly settle for, thanks to college.

It is a constant kick in the gut to be living in these times. I feel trapped - by my degree, my debt and the economy. I watch friends with high school diplomas work at the mall and even they make more than I do. Even better for them, they don’t owe several thousand dollars to banks for student loans that were a joke. And I’m sick of the argument that eventually I’ll earn more than them and be better off. It’s crap logic to assume that. After all, I’ve been out two years (not making money), where as they’ve been working for the past 6-7 years making a reasonable salaries in the department stores. By the time I find work, I’ll still have to spend 20 years giving my money to lenders. On the contrary, they won’t. Every dime they make is their own, where as the dime I’ll make will belong to someone else. The idea that “college was a good idea” has to be the biggest con ever sold. Like millions of other students, I have been enslaved by the “hope” that things will work out if I just pay my dues. Unfortunately, I’m paying my dues in more ways than one and it’s still not paying off.

I’ve tried to find work in every area that I can think of: marketing, advertising, PR, teaching, policing, dispatching, jailing, dog catching, meter reading – you name it, I’ve tried my hand at it. Two years into my job search, however, I have no prospects, no sign of things improving and the fear of not knowing when I’ll be able to truly start my life. As I mentioned, I’m engaged (getting married in December). It’s hard to say whether I’ll be able to afford a honeymoon, let alone the responsibilities of marriage. But… as much as I worry, I can’t continue to hold out on beginning my life. My fiancée, thank God, has found work (as a Clinical Lab Scientist in a hospital, making what my friends at the mall make, which is $40k). Unfortunately, she’ll have to settle for the roll of “Sugar Momma” until my situation improves and, for that, I feel extremely guilty. The burden that I carry has been placed upon her shoulders now, too, and I hate it. She’s got her own worries regarding work and student loans. I’ve only made those fears worse and it sucks to know that.

In closing, I can only say that I hope things get better. I use to say that things can’t get worst, but as my life has continued to suck, I have to admit I was wrong about that. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, though. Maybe I’ll win the lottery: the odds of that happening seem about as favorable as me finding a job.

Good luck to everyone.

Well I have a BS in Comm/ Mass Media with a minor in journalism. I had 2 internships with the biggest companies there are in my field at the time. "The AP" The NABJ and a large paper in Texas. I Networked. worked hard and paid for school myself. took me forever! to finish but I did. and STILL!! to NO AVAIL! Can not find a job! outside Flipping BURGERS!! because of my BS comm. Degree! getting a degree in Comm. was one of the biggest mistakes of my life! I have been working at an Amusement! park! making Min. Wage! Here I am with 6 years exp. A Bachelors degree! Interships out my a** when I was in college and my current supervisor IS IN HIGHSCHOOL!!! Because I worked 30 hours a week and held 2 jobs while in school my grades weren't good enough for me to get into grad school...now..as I can build a life size paper airplane with all the grad. school rejection letters I have. AT this point I think I am going to start going to high schools and speaking to kids...LISTEN If your parents are poor! and can't put you up after you finish college until you find work then you can't get some libral Arts degree! or you will be operating the bumper! cars at your local "Fun-land" Your boss will be some High school Drop out! who hates you because you went to college and he/she will project their insecurities upon how they treat you because they think that you think you're smarter than them...etc. Now for kids coming from Middle class families, you can do what you want...your parents are paying for your education and can afford to put you up for years after graduation and take care of you as you become a careerbuilder and monster.com zombie in their basement..in front of a computer until something comes up for you. But for the poor students without scholarships and our parents to lean on when you finish you need to set yourself up in a degree program in which you can walk off the stage! right into work on monday morning! Most of my friends in college were engineering majors..and they all walked off stage into 40 to 50k entry level salaries....here I am with my BS DEGREE! making 172 dollars below! the state poverty line! People will tell you to "work harder" bla bla as if ppl like me haven't applied to 100 thousand jobs! attended 100,000 career fairs...re-constructed resumes 100,000 times..kiss A** a million times...only to get phone calls from companies asking me if I'd like to sell Vacuums Door to door! 100% commission based salary mind you! That's why I went to COLLEGE! so I wouldn't have! to do some job like that...many of us go to college not because we already know what we want to do..but because we know we don't want to be working at the local factory! until we're 70. I know maybe I should "Think more positive" yeah that will do it! I will use a Jedi Mind trick! to get someone to give me a job..That crap doesn't work kids! it's a Buy product! for people to make money and sell books! they title "think this way and this will happen" it's so people can make tons of money traveling around giving seminars. about how they changed their thinking and changed their life..Barbera Enrich who wrote that book "Nickel and Dimed" (great! book by the way) has a new book out where she exposes the BS in that "think positive" will change everything..I'm not saying thinking negative will help....However there are tons of college grads that are flipping burgers right now.whom have been thinking positive for 10 years! or longer and nothing has happened! I am under the belief that "optimist" become Optimist due to their fortune and "pessimist" become pessimist due to their mis-fortune. Sure you may have had it hard! and struggled and lived at the ymca etc. but one day...you got your big break so you preach perseverance.....however! there are millions! out there that "it" never happens for them! you don't see books! or movies about them! there are millions more Chris Gardners of the world whom's story didn't end the way it did for will smith in that pursuit of happiness movie.
So kids...go to college, (or the military is a great option if your country is not at war) I for one wish I had gone into the military looking back. But STAY AWAY! from any major in which during class you and your classmates are outside playing "Move that tennis ball over here without touching it" lol yeah it was fun...when I had a comm course and we did things like that..but..now...I move 9 year olds from go-cart to go cart...So RUN! RUN! RUN! from The comm. departments at various colleges...(at least in the south! or the city I live in it's worthless) I'm sure ppl in other places have had tons of success with their comm. degree. but the only problem is..when you grad. with a comm degree and can't find a job...you don't have the resources! to move to a different market! Lol So Sad but true…I have a friend that works for a large company in a big city that suggested to me one time. “ya know you should just move to LA or something the market is different in xyz city and you may have more success” LOL o Really?? Really? How on EARTH! Would I do that! With my 440 Dollar! Pay check which I work nearly 80 hours to obtain. Some people just have no idea…..I guess I should have kept in mind this friends parents paid all her bills…through college and for years after until she was able to clear her debt. My goodness..okay this rant has been long enough…I gotta go…I’m sure some kids await me to hit me with spit balls…..6 more months of this and I’ll be hanging by a shower curtain! Thanks Communication! Degree!

Well I have a BS in Comm/ Mass Media with a minor in journalism. I had 2 internships with the biggest companies there are in my field at the time. “The AP” The NABJ and a large paper in Texas. Because I worked 30 hours a week and held 2 jobs while in school my grades weren’t good enough for me to get into grad school…now..as I can build a life size paper airplane with all the grad. school rejection letters I have. AT this point I think I am going to start going to high schools and speaking to kids…LISTEN If your parents are poor! and can’t put you up after you finish college until you find work then you can’t get some libral Arts degree! or you will be operating the bumper! cars at your local “Fun-land” Your boss will be some High school Drop out! who hates you because you went to college and he/she will project their insecurities upon how they treat you because they think that you think you’re smarter than them…etc. Now for kids coming from Middle class families, you can do what you want…your parents are paying for your education and can afford to put you up for years after graduation and take care of you as you become a careerbuilder and monster.com zombie in their basement..in front of a computer until something comes up for you. But for the poor students without scholarships and our parents to lean on when you finish you need to set yourself up in a degree program in which you can walk off the stage! right into work on monday morning! Most of my friends in college were engineering majors..and they all walked off stage into 40 to 50k entry level salaries….here I am with my BS DEGREE! making 172 dollars below! the state poverty line! People will tell you to “work harder” bla bla as if ppl like me haven’t applied to 100 thousand jobs! attended 100,000 career fairs…re-constructed resumes 100,000 times..kiss A** a million times…only to get phone calls from companies asking me if I’d like to sell Vacuums Door to door! 100% commission based salary mind you! That’s why I went to COLLEGE! so I wouldn’t have! to do some job like that…many of us go to college not because we already know what we want to do..but because we know we don’t want to be working at the local factory! until we’re 70. I know maybe I should “Think more positive” yeah that will do it! I will use a Jedi Mind trick! to get someone to give me a job..That crap doesn’t work kids! it’s a Buy product! for people to make money and sell books! they title “think this way and this will happen” it’s so people can make tons of money traveling around giving seminars. about how they changed their thinking and changed their life..Barbera Enrich who wrote that book “Nickel and Dimed” (great! book by the way) has a new book out where she exposes the BS in that “think positive” will change everything..I’m not saying thinking negative will help….However there are tons of college grads that are flipping burgers right now.whom have been thinking positive for 10 years! or longer and nothing has happened! I am under the belief that “optimist” become Optimist due to their fortune and “pessimist” become pessimist due to their mis-fortune. Sure you may have had it hard! and struggled and lived at the ymca etc. but one day…you got your big break so you preach perseverance…..however! there are millions! out there that “it” never happens for them! you don’t see books! or movies about them! there are millions more Chris Gardners of the world whom’s story didn’t end the way it did for will smith in that pursuit of happiness movie.
So kids…go to college, (or the military is a great option if your country is not at war) I for one wish I had gone into the military looking back. But STAY AWAY! from any major in which during class you and your classmates are outside playing “Move that tennis ball over here without touching it” lol yeah it was fun…when I had a comm course and we did things like that..but..now…I move 9 year olds from go-cart to go cart…So RUN! RUN! RUN! from The comm. departments at various colleges…(at least in the south! or the city I live in it’s worthless) I’m sure ppl in other places have had tons of success with their comm. degree. but the only problem is..when you grad. with a comm degree and can’t find a job…you don’t have the resources! to move to a different market!
It is who you know, what you do, and experience that gets you a job. I use to have a job making almost 6 figures with no degree. I got the job because of who I knew. I moved to another city and left work for 3 years to finish my bachelors degree. I could not find a job unless I wanted to accept half of my previous salary. I have experience and a bachelors, but no connections. To get that high paying job that I use to have with no degree, I have to move back near all my connections. The place where I will be possibly working has a bunch of people with experience and no degree making six figures. I should have stayed put, getting my degree seems like it was a waste of time when it comes to employment.

Bachelor's degrees can get you a job, but they will be entry-level and not nearly as good as had you gutted it out for another yr or 2 ang received a Master's.
I am changing careers at 33, and will be getting 2 associate's degrees next year (Biz Mgmt and Database Mgmt) - degrees which I will be using primarily as transcripts for transferring to another college to pursue my BS in Management Info Systems and ultimately my MBA by age 38.
What really troubles me is so many of these disillusioned people who think that by attending some University-of-Phoenix-type of crappy, 2nd-rate, 2-yr online college that their associate's degree in Criminal Justice will get them into the Las Vegas Crime Lab or maybe into the FBI. WRONG!
If you're unemployed like me and want to take advantage of the fake recession, get as much college as u possibly can! I'm not gonna stop until they tell me there are no more classes that I can possibly take!

Since when does the professor's political idology have to do with his ability to teach? I've had idiot profs on both sides of the spectrum. In fact, the most right-wing prof I had ranted for an entire class about computers only being invented to teach people to hate America! Figure THAT one out.
Obviously, the degree is supposed to be the foundation for one's knowledge base, and experience becomes the rest. However, with the "recession" going on, companies are caring less and less about both education AND experience and more about who they can keep and pay the least without bringing the company down.

A degree is only a small but very important part of the battle. You need a college degree to get a decent gig but honestly, I haven't used a fraction of what I learned in my 3 college degrees! Real experience is what counts. I finished my Bachelors in IT just to keep my job, not advance in any way or get more money.

Flame away but I think a huge part of the problem is major Universities are run by the idiot liberals. You just don't get the logic and reasoned classes you need to get a decent gig. ... unless you want to go work in a "green" job. In that case, you go have fun doing that.
