Yet again, here in Des Moines it’s snowing. We’ve received 8 inches in the past few hours, but school isn’t going to be cancelled. Our school board doesn’t know what to do with the 6 days off for the seniors (go 2010!), so they are currently wary of cancelling school. It’s 10:10 pm on Monday, but by 6:57 am on Tuesday, we probably will be cancelled. The best thing is that we always get lots of snow in Iowa, but nothing as much as we have had this season. In 2010 alone, we’ve had over 1.5 feet of snow. As I said before, there’s at least 3 feet of snow on the ground. It keeps melting, but we keep getting more snow and more snow days. You gotta love the Midwest!

Well here in Iowa we have received record amounts of snow this year. Des Moines Public Schools was closed for 6 days, 2 of which were when our finals were supposed to happen. That was a number of days off that hasn’t been attained since the early 1970′s. Carroll School District has had 9 days off. We currently have over 3 feet of snow on the ground. So I totally disagree with this graph, because we are very likely of having a snow day this year.

That’s nothing. When I was young, we lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down at the mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.

Yeah, I’m in PIttsburgh too. We didn’t have to spend the night but left around seven PM. THey aren’t going to close schools because of an inch and the power was out all day! if you live in britain they close for 1/4 inch lucky

Amen soup. But it’s a superiority complex for them to tell us all how much better they are for having to trudge through snow all the time. I’m sure they’re also jealous that they don’t get to have any days off from school due to weather. And for anyone living in Va, especially those of you near DC, you know driving in this is no picnic with the morons we call drivers here…

If you read the chart, you’d realize that it says “more than an inch.” Also, like other posters have mentioned, in areas where it doesn’t snow regularly, we aren’t as prepared for it; it’d be a waste of money to be constantly prepared for something that usually won’t happen, such as the two storms this season. Besides, people in VA can’t drive when the roads are dry, so having to be on the roads with these morons when they’re icy and snowy is like signing a death letter.

NOWAI! Yes, I wish people would realize that. I’ve lived in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and now DC, and it’s obvious that DC just isn’t prepared to handle snow like Pittsburgh and Cleveland are, because fiscally, it doesn’t make sense to be prepared for something that has little chance of happening. Why should DC prepare for 2 blizzards within a month and a half when that never happens? Of course we’re getting snowed in this weekend! We’re not Alaska.

Our kids have been out all week so far and now they are calling for more of it this weekend. I hope they at least get to go for a part day tomorrow so that they remember that school’s not out for the season. I, for one, would be happy not to see anymore of the white stuff until next winter.

I live in Alaska, and along with that, they only allow about 5 snow days, unless there is an emergency. We had a 5 (I think) day wind storm which went about 100mph, and they didn’t cancel school on any of them.

As a parent, I prefer it to snow on the weekend or on a scheduled day off. Don’t have to worry about making up the day.
Plus, the school officials never win. Cancel and people complain it wasn’t bad enough to cancel; don’t cancel and people complain the roads are treacherous and the kids are at risk.

At least we got today off! And I’m predicting an early dismissal Friday for this weekend’s storm…and perhaps Monday off as well. FCPS isn’t doing too poorly, even with its weekend snows. The extended winter break was nice, too.
