Heh heh, sonny, we used to get same thing on these big black vinyl discs called records. Had to manually turn them over to hear it all, one good song perside if you were lucky.

Then there was 45s, with only one good song!

ok, im the one who posted the graph, and i can see there has been a lot of misconception about what i meant exactly. When i say “music these days” of course i mean mainstream junk you hear on the raidio and mtv. i am a devoted metal listener and i am aware they are on the opposite end of the spectrum in talent and song writing knowledge compared to pop,rap, hip hop ect.

I have often bought U2 CDs ans of course, there are songs I never heard of. But that doesn’t mean the’re crap. Songs such as “Numb” and “Breath” are songs I never even heard of until I bought the CDs they were on.

This has been the standard for popular music for decades. Sometimes, it’s just that you’ve heard the “hits” so many times that they’ve grown on you and the unfamiliarity of the others dulls their appeal. More often, that’s not the case.
If you want albums that are quality through-and-through, you don’t need to look at any particularly genre. They all have their crap albums. You need to find albums in the genre of your choice by bands that aren’t all over the radio.

I see/hear all this crap all the time from people who get their music knowledge from FM radio, American Idol, etc, and who have no idea what good music is. There are many, many brilliant musicians out there who work hard and go through the struggle to make great records. If you’re looking to marketing ploys for quality music that will stand the test of time, you are in the world of musical fail. Those avenues are used solely to make large amounts of money quickly. Don’t believe me? Look at the resell values on eBay, half.com and amazon for anything recorded by anybody who’s been on American Idol, or for anything from “artists” like Britney, N-Sync, etc. Then check the resell values for Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane. They died 40+ years ago and yet continue to grow their audiences. Go figure. In short, put in the work, do the research, expand your mind and you’ll be rewarded with fantastic music. Whole albums of it.

I always used to tell people who made the “one good song on the album” complaint to explore music a bit more and find better artists to support. Maybe move away from what the radio stations play 100 times a day or what the major labels push.

They look at you like you’re an alien creature from another dimension.

Man, anyone who uses the phrase “these days” should have their graph automatically voted down to 1. These cod-flabbit rolling rock sound devices these days! I’m going to get in my Model-T and put my driving gloves and goggles on and head down to the local music shoppe to insist that the only music allowed to be sold is that of our PROPER era, like Mozart and Beethoven! I think you are wrong, Artists now have to sell singles rather than albums. Downloading has seen to that. So in the past this was maybe the case. Now, every song has to stand on it’s own merit.

I was just wondering the other day why some bands didn’t come out with maybe a new song every 6-8 weeks or so. Then I realized that a) they can’t write music during a tour, and b) most of the songs aren’t very good, and after releasing 4-5 bad songs in a row, they’d lose popularity.

Too bad.

You should listen to metal albums then. Every piece is worked out well. And as there might be songs that rise out from the others, often all of them are unique.
