  1. Harrstein says:

    and the sony rootkit/drm software?

  2. NoOneReally says:

Also note that “hit song” does not necessarily mean it’s any good, so the album may contain only bad songs.

    • Kukki says:

      that’s entertainment! eh… popbusiness.

      • Sprite101 says:

Well not only, that, that’s the whole music market strategy. By 12 songs you never heard of so you can get the one song you like. This is nothing new.

        • Mervyn says:

I have often bought U2 CDs ans of course, there are songs I never heard of. But that doesn’t mean the’re crap. Songs such as “Numb” and “Breath” are songs I never even heard of until I bought the CDs they were on.

  3. CyborgJesus says:

You should listen to metal albums then. Every piece is worked out well. And as there might be songs that rise out from the others, often all of them are unique.

  4. Jim says:

Wow. Yeah, “these days” things are so much different. People have been complaining about this since the invention of the LP.

  5. Pablo says:

Does anyone even buy ‘albums’ or CD’s these days? My sons either just watch the video on youtube or download specific songs from itunes.

  6. nffcnnr says:

Agreed. The creator of this graph clearly listens to crap. It’s really not that difficult to find good music by talented and dedicated artists who ply their craft out of love and not for the fame and money. Top 40 is for the lazy.

    • X says:

I always used to tell people who made the “one good song on the album” complaint to explore music a bit more and find better artists to support. Maybe move away from what the radio stations play 100 times a day or what the major labels push.

They look at you like you’re an alien creature from another dimension. :-)

    • vince says:

not true, this graph is directed towards rap and hiphop yes but look at my other pics. i listen to metal and i know those bands arent like that

  7. Akkhima says:

The “hit” songs are very rarely the best song on the album.

  8. The_Great_G says:

This is only true if you suck as an artist.
Listen to DSotM. Every song is good and the album is greater than the sum of its songs

  9. Sean says:

I was just wondering the other day why some bands didn’t come out with maybe a new song every 6-8 weeks or so. Then I realized that a) they can’t write music during a tour, and b) most of the songs aren’t very good, and after releasing 4-5 bad songs in a row, they’d lose popularity.

    Too bad. :-(

  10. Larii says:

OMG that is SOOOOO true! Although there are one or two songs that aren’t featured that are actually good.

  11. SigSauer says:

This is very sad, but true. Musicians aren’t what they were in the 60′s, 70′s and some in the 90′s.

    • David says:

      Depressing, isn’t it?

    • Jonesty McStabass says:

No, music genres aren’t what they were in the 60′s, 70′s and some in the 90′s. Music and musicians are exactly the same and exactly the same quality. You know there was graffiti in ancient greece complaining about society “these days”

  12. Jessica says:

I think you are listening to the wrong music if this is the case.

  13. alastair says:

I think you are wrong, Artists now have to sell singles rather than albums. Downloading has seen to that. So in the past this was maybe the case. Now, every song has to stand on it’s own merit.

  14. buy better albums… you must have bad taste mon!

  15. Tweekee says:

    In other words: Filler.

  16. Anonymiss says:

The chart only applies to popular artists and artists that are pressured to make a certain amount of albums in X amount of time.

  17. Joseph says:

Cynical, aren’t we? Don’t listen to the radio for album guidance.

  18. nfcs says:

Well whoerver did this graph clearly listens to too much mainstream radio and watches too much mtv, one of the last albums I bought was Crack the Skye by Mastodon and it doesnt have a bad song in it.

  19. Mally says:

    Lulz @ “these days”
Because apparently any sort music composed after the forties is TERRIBLE.

  20. Jonesty McStabass says:

look up “sugar baby love” on youtube

  21. Mike says:

Man, anyone who uses the phrase “these days” should have their graph automatically voted down to 1. These cod-flabbit rolling rock sound devices these days! I’m going to get in my Model-T and put my driving gloves and goggles on and head down to the local music shoppe to insist that the only music allowed to be sold is that of our PROPER era, like Mozart and Beethoven! Down with growth and evolution of society! Times never needed to change!

  22. NP says:

I see/hear all this crap all the time from people who get their music knowledge from FM radio, American Idol, etc, and who have no idea what good music is. There are many, many brilliant musicians out there who work hard and go through the struggle to make great records. If you’re looking to marketing ploys for quality music that will stand the test of time, you are in the world of musical fail. Those avenues are used solely to make large amounts of money quickly. Don’t believe me? Look at the resell values on eBay, half.com and amazon for anything recorded by anybody who’s been on American Idol, or for anything from “artists” like Britney, N-Sync, etc. Then check the resell values for Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane. They died 40+ years ago and yet continue to grow their audiences. Go figure. In short, put in the work, do the research, expand your mind and you’ll be rewarded with fantastic music. Whole albums of it.

  23. Erik the Dude says:

This has been the standard for popular music for decades. Sometimes, it’s just that you’ve heard the “hits” so many times that they’ve grown on you and the unfamiliarity of the others dulls their appeal. More often, that’s not the case.
If you want albums that are quality through-and-through, you don’t need to look at any particularly genre. They all have their crap albums. You need to find albums in the genre of your choice by bands that aren’t all over the radio.

  24. vince says:

ok, im the one who posted the graph, and i can see there has been a lot of misconception about what i meant exactly. When i say “music these days” of course i mean mainstream junk you hear on the raidio and mtv. i am a devoted metal listener and i am aware they are on the opposite end of the spectrum in talent and song writing knowledge compared to pop, rap, hip hop ect.

  25. vince says:

thats what i meant, if you look at my other pictures i am am metal listener and this graph was aimed towards mainstream music

  26. LBean says:

    Nobody likes kneejerk cynisism.

Olden times had their share of bad things too, you just choose to forget them.

  27. PsychoDad says:

Heh heh, sonny, we used to get same thing on these big black vinyl discs called records. Had to manually turn them over to hear it all, one good song perside if you were lucky.

Then there was 45s, with only one good song!

    /My lawn.
    //Off it.

  28. Wynona says:

That’s only mainstream music….non-mainstream msuci is where the art is

  29. HBD22Tech says:

I very much prefer Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails.

  30. The_Great_G says:

    Rock

  31. HBD22Tech says:

    What?

  32. MommaGee says:

    Howdy
