I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Wrong. “Linux” is a generic term used to refer to a wide range of operating systems based on the Linux kernel, not just GNU/Linux (e.g. OpenWRT is also a Linux operating system).
Tux the Penguin is a mascot of the kernel itself though.
Maybe Gnu would enter the lexicon more often if they actually finished the HURD. The only reason it is GNU/Linux is because GNU does not have a functioning kernel. If you follow the line if thinking that you are, the OS I am using should be used GNU/Linux/X/QT/GTK/
For the record, you won’t actually find many penguins in Antarctica. Most species of penguins live further north in warmer areas. There’s even penguins on the equators in the Galapagos Islands. And yes, well the Pittsburgh Zoo. . . and many other zoos. Also the Pittsburgh Aviary has penguins! We get double the penguins!
They’re also found in South America and Southern Africa.
I don’t get why this graph is funny anyway. I could basically say the same for any animal. Dogs are found in — Movies, Every city on earth, Toy Stores, Korean BBQ.
See, if I had made this graph, I would have added another color for “The Antarctic”. Of course I wouldn’t add that color to the pie chart, that would just be silly.
You forgot the mascot of the operating system Linux.
People should be ripped to pieces for forgetting Tux.

…and in other really cold places like San Francisco…
…and Australia…
…and zoos..
Many will not survive.
You forgot pittsburgh
And Wilkes-Barre
And Youngstown State.
There are plenty in zoos around the world I imagine.
thats what i was gonna say… HELLO: when i think penguins i think antarctica and zoos!!
The entire reason I came to the comments page was to point that out.
Almost every zoo has some
You also forgot the biscuit tin.

…I believe the Pittsburgh comment was referring to the hockey team…but you are correct as well…
They’re also found in South America and Southern Africa.

Um, sorry to disagree with you but… I just returned from Antarctica and there are penguines EVERYWHERE. I came across a lease four differnent species.
They’re in South America too.
Also in displays with Santa Claus even though he is supposed to be from the Arctic (NORTH Pole) (NOT Antarctica/ SOUTH Pole).
…never mind that he doesn’t exist and all.
What do you mean he doesn’t exist?????
You forgot on (top of) the television set!
And you’ll find them in the North Pole, duh.
where????? Dude, please tell me you’re joking.
Actually, penguins are in the north arctic, not south.
Edit: I had them confused with mr poppers penguins >.>

They’re also conveniently located in Gotham City.
(Not the North Pole, though – too many bumbles)
Youngstown State University (Ohio) mascot is the penguin. I have no idea why.
You forgot Australia, there’s plenty of penguins in Melbourne
Where is the funny? How did this get on the front page? Where am I? Who are you people?
You’re in Oz, and if you tap your heels together three times and say “there’s no place like GraphJam” over and over, you’ll find yourself there!
Pittsburgh too
Tux the penguin rocks.
I read a Pengiun once or was it a Puffin.
why not on the helipad???

Just in case.
On top of your television, of course…. and since it’s just after eight o’clock, it’s time for the penguin on top of your television set to explode.
