It’s a way of referring to someone without specifying a gender. While grammatically incorrect, it’s less cumbersome than saying “him or her”, “s/he”, etc. It’s not as noticeable when hearing it as seeing it written. Here’s a funny and informative bit on the whole gender-neutral pronoun thing:
