the only problem with that is that everybody does it, and you end up taking turns being nearly bankrupt. what you really want is the railroads.

Monopoly only takes that long if you’re doing it wrong. A normal 4 player game of monopoly takes like 60 minutes, 90 max. If you use house rules that break the game (a la money on free parking) then the game’s economy doesn’t constrict properly and it drags on forever until someone gets a huge lucky streak or everyone gives up. Settlers of Catan is a better game, but I still like a good game of monopoly, assuming no retarded house rules.

My brothers and I started a game around 11. We played until 1:35 and then the boys did the math, declared I had won, and one went off to his room, the other stayed in the room to tend the fire.

Something to consider if you ever find yourself wanting to play Monopoly: think of the last time you played Monopoly. Were you happier after you played than you were before you began?

When I was a kid we just played timed games – Mom would set the kitchen timer and we’d count our money after it dinged. Probably saved a lot of hatred of Monopoly on our part.

Most games should take about 2 hours if you are playing it right. The thing is people don’t actually read all the rules and that’s what causes marathon games.
For example, if you land on a property and decide not to buy it, then that property immediately goes up for auction and everyone has a chance to buy it right then if they bid the highest. Bidding starts at zero, so if no one else wants it, you could get a property for free. But most people don’t know that.

Haha…we don’t even count the money. We just declare a winner. Although if we want to make the person feel as though they’ve accomplished something we’ll make horrible trades so everyone but the “winner” becomes bankrupt. It’s a finely honed system in my family.

Uhm…you don’t have to play that long…buy and trade until you have a corner, preferably around the jail. After you have that, it’s a simple matter to buy houses and create a complete deathtrap. My games usually don’t last another hour after I get the corner.

I never personally get board of monopoly I can play for hours, really, I can.
More than 8, once it gets to 14 then I start getting a bit anxious XD, but when I play it rarely goes for over 3 hours, I gamble to much.(i’ve only played twice to where it’s gotten over 13 hours)

We just play for an hour or so, write down where everybody is and who’s turn is next and bag up all our properties and money to continue the game another day… It works great!
