When I was in 5th grade, my school spent the money that was supposed to go to fixing the playground on a staff rest lounge. There was broken glass on the slides, and they bought new couches for the teachers! WTF!

My old high school did something similar back in my freshman year. Instead of using the money they raised to buy some new books to replace our old ones that were probably as old as the school itself, They bought over a hundred new tables to replace the ones we had before (which were perfectly fine). The tables they got were not only smaller, but they didn’t even use all of them, about half were just sitting in the halls.

The sports chunk should be about twice that size. When I was in high school it seemed like all they cared about was getting the sports teams new jerseys and equipment.

The school I transferred out of fired half their janitorial staff, got rid of band, and raised tuition so they could build a new wing.

Oh, man… my hometown is definitely one of the worst schools to do that. it used to get flooded out every year, and as soon as they got enough money… they refloored the gym (completely unnecessary) and added a youth football league to the school district.

Apparently your teachers all work for free.

(also: repairing broken stuff, art projects, stationery, shop and art class stuff, taxes (employers always have to pay taxes, even if they’re the government), bureacracy stuff, finally upgrading school computers to windows XP (if that), school cafeteria, janitors, electrical bills, water, gas, chemicals for chemistry, physics stuff, ancient TV sets with tape recorders for school television, locks on cupboards to prevent the remote for those things from being stolen, etc. etc.)

And in my school, but not in every one, special funds for “special” kids, super high tech plasma TV screens (9 of them) for showing Powerpoint slideshows containing useless information, a person to make such TVs incapable of being manipulated by students, 40 cm high blocks of concrete outside to sit on and a massive amount of bicycle stands.

my school just got rid of our art program to allow the former main art room to be turned into a weight lifting room and the smaller one into a Varsity locker room. WTF mate!

basically my school is all sports, they wouldn’t give a hoot about school.
They even cut class time to make a rally to tell you about the week’s football game or dance. 10-20 minutes each class.

I live at a residential school. Most of the money we get goes back to the government apparently, because everything is taking a hit: building maintenance, staff wages, food, academics, information technology . . . the list goes on and on. A graph: all expenses crammed into a small wedge.

This is freaky. That is almost an exact copy of my high school’s budget.
I just have to replace ”hardboard floor” with “climbing wall and luxurious furniture”. The education level is horrible but at least we,ve got to have the most comfy seats in the county.

I’m sure you’re right. Like supplies for all the fun and exciting hands-on projects we’d rather be doing, or textbooks that aren’t from before the teacher was born. But actually sports would be much larger at my school. As for it being a money-maker….the money only goes to more sports, nothing else.

My school did something like that, but instead of the new computers going only to the office they went to the office and the Engineering lab. It was good for my engineering class and the AutoCAD classes but we still have terrible computers throughout the rest of the computer labs.

Not to mention academics as well.

My school stopped doing morning announcements and replaced it with several expensive 40″ plasma TVs placed around the school in the hallways so you can 1) only look at them during your hectic passing periods and 2) have to wait through perpetual ads before you get to the segmented announcements (one announcement per screenshot which lasts 10-20 seconds). Not even exaggerating here.

I see this all the time at my school. My audio production class has computers you can barely do anything on, and all the people in the admin office have nice fast PCs with wide, flat monitors. And also, when building the new high school, they had all the coaches and sports people hired before they even looked for teachers.

Yeah, but if broken down into just two categories… helping kids and staff the GREEN would be much larger. Because the Gym Floor and Sports are a subset of “Helping Kids”. Especially if it is a Gym Floor or a McDonald’s lifestyle.
