No actually, I am in college. Which doesn’t change the fact that this is effing stupid.
I live in a city, near many colleges, and I think it’s lame. Not quite as lame as using the work “suburbia” but still lame.
Because using the wrong “work” isn’t lame at all.

Well, drivers would have a whole lot more sympathy for peds were they to, like, look, or something before stepping off the curb to jaywalk across? At least turn down the volume of your ipod so you can hear the car honking when you step out ten feet in front of a car.
These are the very same students that can get off a bus or a streetcar and then proceed to step in front of the very same vehicle they just exited as it accelerates away from the stop. Our best and brightest, indeed.
I admit, I jaywalk all the time too – it’s pretty deeply ingrained in the culture where I live – but at least I look first. Even when crossing a fairly minor road that happens to run the length of campus.
Yes. The associated graph for pedestrians on a college campus would read: “just wander aimlessly with a bluetooth in one ear, an mp3 player in the other ear, while reading a magazine, and pursue a random course along sidewalk, street, lawn, and pond; pause periodically to rail at motorists for ‘endangering you’.”
Especially step right out in front of a bus, because we all know nobody taught you to look both ways IN KINDERGARTEN.

Not the greatest graph, or rather chart, but kudos for use of the word “Frogger” as a verb.

I’m a motorist… and when I’m not… I’m a pedestrian.
I don’t floor it for yellows. I stop at the STOP line and not in the cross walk… even if I’m turning right. (Yes you still have to stop if you’re turning right.) and I don’t drive like a maniac through green lights. Though I am usually in the right lane which puts me at odds with jaywalkers.
When I’m a pedestrian. I cross in cross walks. I wait for stop hands and I don’t jaywalk. (And I’m being honest not preachy) Jaywalking is illegal. Just like speeding, and not stopping for red lights.
I dare say though that most motorists think they own the road and aren’t looking for something squishy and most pedestrians think the law is on their side no matter where they are.
For instance; 4 months ago I was driving past our local college. It is a 50 km/h zone. I was driving fifty. There are two lanes in each direction with a large grass divider. A bus stopped in the right lane to let people off. At that location there is a set of lights for the college (they’re a little longish but most people will wait.)
I saw the bus slowing and moved to the left lane before the intersection and passed through it, slowing to 40 just to be safe. One of the kids who jumped off the bus ran out behind it and in front of me and ended up on the hood of my car as I wailed on the brakes. The bus was red… and so was everything he was wearing so I reacted rather late.
I didn’t hurt him (concorde’s have nicely sloped noses and I was going slow enough) but the keys on his belt scratched the hood of my car for a good two feet. Which he ended up paying for… as well as a hefty ticket from the police, who saw everything from across the street, for jaywalking.
It’s never a case of this idiot or that idiot but a complete lack of respect for each other and the rules… at least in my area. Though this area in general seems less distracted… pedestrians have ipods… but they look before they step out… even to jaywalk. And driver’s here are at least on a bluetooth… if talking at all. Still eye contact and a nod or wave are the name of the game. If I’m walking I look and make eye contact with the driver I walking near. I give a nod and a wave of thanks… even if the law says he must yield his right of way… it’s just polite… and makes sure he isn’t about to run you down if the light changes.

The point is that you and Alex are gigantic douchebags.
You hit a pedestrian. Just admit you are a bad driver and no one will have to read your pathetic internet plea to get someone to agree with you.
tl;dr version:
“I nailed some kid getting off a bus, and I’m more concerned about the damage he did to my car. I’m not a monster! AGREE WITH ME!”
Because pedestrians are never at fault. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve almost hit because they do the whole “I’m not sure if I’m going to use the crosswalk or keep walking on the sidewalk” trot. Or people on bikes who don’t even look where they’re going let alone slow down because they don’t obey traffic rules even though they’re supposed to. Or how about people who don’t even use the crosswalk, they just dart across traffic hoping nobody will hit them when there’s a crosswalk 25 feet down from where they are.
Try driving in Boston.
And don’t start a sentence with “Because”; it looks stupid.

I disagree with this graph. A campus near by you HAVE to pay attention for pedestrians… there are no Ipods or bluetooths usually involved, but the students on this campus show no fear to traffic what so ever. There are several cross walks in place, less than a block apart, but the students casually cross the street where ever they please. They don’t even bother to look if there is a car coming… Just jaywalk blindly into traffic. I drive past in constant paranoia and anger thinking I could hit someone because they don’t think about the laws of nature… “Is there a car I’m walking out in front of? Who is at the great risk if there is, in comparative mass can I stop a car if it can’t stop in time? If I walk out now can the car see me because it’s dusk and hard to see me in my all dark clothing? Am I in a cross walk?”
Agreeably motorists should always give the right of way to pedestrians, but I live in a major city and always take precautions when crossing the street, simple things like; is the walk signal on for me? even if I do have the right of way does that car see me? Simple logic should be practiced by pedestrians for their own safety… bah I say!

I work on a college campus. I stop at every stop sign, and crosswalk, because it’s the law.
I’m constantly amazed at the complete blind faith that I witness every time I get behind the wheel of my F-150. Everyday I witness students either jaywalking, and, or walking in the street. Why? I have no idea. I have become numb to the poor judgement on their part.
If a student walks out into the street in front of me, well, truck beats kid… always.

When I jaywalk on campus, I wait until there is a break in traffic. Actually, so do most people on my campus. On other colleges, however…
I suppose I am just ‘old-fashioned’. I walk to the crosswalk, wait until the light for the pedestrians says ‘walk’ or has the little guy walking lit up in white, and if necessary wait until the car speeding up to the corner is stopped. I do this mainly because I DON’T WANT TO GET HIT, it is the right and proper thing to do, and I am usually early enough to where I am going to be able to cross at the crosswalk. I live in a college town where pedestrians are allowed to cross wherever they want (stepping out from between two SUV’s while dressed all in black at midnight is MY personal favorite for the Darwin Award) without fear of tickets or blame for any accidents they cause. Frankly, it is a pain in the A$$ and they all deserve to get sent to traffic school and fined their entire tuition each time they cross a street incorrectly.
At some campuses there aren’t crosswalks on all of the streets you need to cross to get to and from class.
Sadly, even waiting to cross at the right time doesn’t mean you won’t get hit. I’ve been almost hit countless times by drivers not seeing me (I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt) (mid-day, not blending in with anything) when I have the ok to go, and they even have a sign telling them to yield to pedestrians.
Honestly, sometimes, it’s almost safer to jaywalk.

And if they can’t be bothered to walk the short distance to the cross walk and actually wait for the light to change in their favor, they are probably only going to waste their education on evil career paths like becoming an ambulance chasing trial lawyer or middle management anyway(or *shudder* marketing people that produce those deceitful commercials for debt relief, cash for gold, or ambulance chasing lawyers).
LOL This was my experience with crossing the road on my way to class; did you attend my university? Or do all of them have roads with aggressive drivers? Is it because there’s a low speed limit and they can’t handle it?
At my school I once saw a car have to sit through an entire green light because there was a big line of people crossing the street in front of it, and none of them were conscientious enough to stop. There are plenty of drivers AND pedestrians who are inconsiderate douche bags.
We wouldn’t have to drive like this if the damn kids would use crosswalks correctly.

) Basically this is true, (the crossings are always in stupid places round my town for some reason…) why people can’t keep to the speed limit, then we can easily go around them and judge their approach time, glaring evily does no help us :p… Oh and solid white lines shouldn’t be crossed unless you can completely make it across the crossing SO DON’T STOP in the middle, I will accidentially scratch you car/walk into it if I’m talking to my mates.
