pots of gold?
They discontinued pots of gold about a year ago. I still haven’t gotten over it. Part of my childhood, gone. =(
But, then the jingle doesn’t make sense!
Bah, pot of gold was added to it long after the cereal was popular. They haven’t always been there.
And now there are those goddamn mini-charms because of budget cuts. still the same number, just half the size.
Is it too mainstream?
How can one forget the Lucky Charm jingle? You totally forgot the pots of gold!
I was just thinking that.
When I was a kid, LC only had Hearts, Stars, Horseshoes, Clovers and Moons. The jingle was the same, but only had these listed. My mom claims that Moons were added after she was a kid. All of the multicolored marshmallows are new and rotate out. Suddenly, LC will be claiming a new Marshmallow and one of the later additions will have disappeared.
Wow. Who knew breakfast cereal had such an Orwellian existence?
May be the best graph ever. Who actually likes the cat food? Here’s me eating lucky charms as a kid: ‘Yeck. Yuck, Yuck, ooh Marshmallow, Yuck.’
Me! I can’t stand the marshmallows, but the cereal itself is pretty tasty.

Do my horrible ways include the cereal sans marshmallows? I can live with that.
You could give me the marshmellows! I offer the cereal in exchange.
But you see it’s all about the mixture of the charms AND the “cat food”! The marshmallows are sweet and the cereal component is more than slightly salty. When eating something sweet, like a cookie, it has to have the subtle salt component to make it really good. That’s why this cereal has been so well-loved and successful all these decades: Sweet + Salt = Yummy.
The CAT FOOD? The only cot product in MY cereal is the cat barf.

The first boxes of Lucky Charms cereal contained marshmallows in the shapes of pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers. The lineup has changed occasionally over the years, beginning with the introduction of blue diamonds in 1975. Purple horseshoes joined the roster in 1984, followed by red balloons in 1989, rainbows in 1992, pots of gold in 1994, leprechaun hats in 1996, shooting stars in 1998, and an hourglass in 2008.[2]
Older marshmallows were phased out periodically. The first shapes to be phased out were the yellow moons and blue diamonds, as General Mills introduced their “Pot of Gold” marshmallow.

I’d eat that!
I liked marshmallow cereal till I was about 8 (back when all the original shapes were there). Then I realised that they all turned slick and snotty by the time you got to the bottom of the bowl and I quit eating them. Ewwwww.
I call it cat food and everyone always disagrees with me. It was with lucky charms that I realized my O.C.D. was out of control, every time I had a spoonful there needed to be 3 cat food pieces per every marshmallow.
You have way too much time on your hands I think…
On the other hand I prefer flakey cereals like total or cornflakes that have totally gone to mush. If I have to be up early the next day and eat in a hurry, I will put the bowl of flakes + cereal in the fridge the night before so it will be suitably mushy the next morning.
I would occasionally eat the marshmallows in order.
Every spoonful of catfood shapes should have at least one marshmellow.

Also, I’m extremely relieved to know that I’m not the only person alive who has always referred to the crunchy bits in Lucky Charms as ‘cat food.’ I can rest easy, now (okay, okay, where now = as soon as I finish catching up on several weeks of graphjam).
Ever since about 18, I started thinking of cereal as “People Kibble”.
It’s a grain compressed into amusing, eye-pleasing shapes, fortified with vitamins, and slopping over in corn syrup and preservatives. If that doesn’t sound like something you would pour into a non-tipping bowl and put on the floor, I don’t know what does…

OMG, I saw this on my phone and I laughed so hard I was crying in my living room, and my husband was looking at me like I had six heads. HAHAHAHAHA! I am so glad someone else thought the same thing, that used to be the first thing that came through my head when I saw the cereal pieces!
Anyone else remember the marshmallows with the “magically” disappearing centers? I always felt like I was being cheated out of my marshmallow goodness.
I use to eat all the cat food bits first and then I got to pretend they didn’t exist while I ate marshmallow cereal.
and yes I remember the disappearing centers, but I never got a box because I didn’t have my own money or something like that at the time.
At least you weren’t cheated out of part of a marshmallow.

I thought I was the only one who called it cat food.
I once had a bowl of dry Lucky Charms and my cat came up, sniffed it for a while, then started eating the cat food part. The werid thing is, she’s an abnormal cat: she won’t eat wet cat food or meat, only her dried cat food.
So I guess Lcuky Charms are My Cat-Approved.
Not mine. My cat barfed in them the ONE time I tried them.
Okay, first, they’re not even marshmallows. They’re marbits. They’re too dried up to be marshmallow anymore. Marbits for all!
And second, the best way to eat Lucky charms is without milk. You sort the cereal into piles, eat all the cat food, and then eat all the marbits. Mmm, sugar buzz. Alternately, you can hang on to a few kibbles to get the marbits out of your teeth once you’re done.

Yeah, I always wondered what those crappy, stale tasting pieces were!…..Wait, does that mean that’s what our cats eat?!?! I’m never feeding my kitties crunchy food again!
While my wife was pregnant she used to go through a whole box of Lucky Charms in one sitting, eating two whole bowls of nothing but the marshmallow bits. Thats why her ass got gestational diabetes! Ha!

I used to close the box between bowls and shake it up to keep the ratio of marshmallows and kibbles even. Did anyone else notice the box was kinda top-loaded with marshmallows?
