What I hate is when one of the managers looks at the long lines at the 5 registers, looks at one of the closed registers, and then just continues pacing. Or even goes and shuts down another register despite only 4 other registers being open. I understand that the employee may have been on break or at the end of the shift, but the manager could at least put someone else on the register.

Target is generally better about having more workers who can open up registers when this happens than Walmart does. I’ve quite literally been in line for half an hour at Walmart (and it wasn’t during the holiday season). I’ve been in the same size lines at Target (originally) but been able to move to shorter lines when 2 or 3 registers get opened up at one time to accommodate for the long line and gotten out in 10 minutes. That tends to be a common experience at all the Targets I’ve been to and for others that I have spoken to about Target vs. Walmart.

They can be bad about opening up registers, but they aren’t as bad as Walmart.

I work at Wal-mart, unfortunately. I’m usually one of the cashiers panicking and cursing the other cashiers to get back on their register. I mean, I understand if they leave when its not busy and you have stuff you need to put back- but seriously, if you see a fellow cashier on by themselves and you’re doing frig all – come help us!

And what’s even worse is that the customers get irate with us when WE’RE the ones who are actually helping them. It’s not our fault. I’m not a supervisor or a manager. I can only do so much.

I always wonder about the people that bring up stuff that don’t have enough money to pay for it. I remember the one time in particular when the items they were removing were totally nonessential like a can of squeezie cheese. Why the hell would you hold a line up if you don’t have enough money to be shopping in the first place? Do you need your depression fix for the week when you realize you can’t buy your squeezie cheese? Go back home, moron.

Our local walmart is open 24 hours (the convenience!) leading up to Christmas. You want to see the Most Depressing Place on Earth, go to Walmart at 2am demoralized sleep-deprived employees listlessly roaming around with no purpose, and the normal lower rungs of society that spend spare time in Wal-mart are in bed, it’s truly the bottom of the barrel of society shopping there. That, and stoned teenagers. Very desperate, and distinctly unfriendly as they seem to assume that the clientele is mostly stealing stuff (probably true). Ah, sleep-deprived, snarky, suspicious checkout clerk- if you’re even at your register… What would we ever do without you?

All interesting responses. My favorite being D-chi’s. But, one, asking for help is dependant on the person you ask. There are some, like me, who’ve been there and remodeled the store so they know where things are/like to be informed, therefore they go and find where things are, and there are morons who don’t give a rat’s ass about customers.

Also, there are times and things that cannot be helped. I work the night shift 2-11 and I’m always trying to zone up my area and having to do other areas as well. Though, when a customer asks a question, I stop, smile and help them out. I know it sounds cliche, but there are some of us out there that actually care about people.

I usually don’t go to Walmart since it’s quite far out of my way (I have to drive west like 40 avenues), but whenever I go, it’s usually with a friend, and always an adventure. I only wish it was closer so we could go wander around all the time.

What terrified me was going to some HUGE walmart when I’d been sleeping in the car (driving to north carolina with the family), and I wandered around half-asleep for like 10 minutes looking for the bathroom.

And if you are close to the front of the line of an open register, there’s always an issue. Either the moron in front of you doesn’t have enough money and repeatedly asks, “how much is it now?” every time an item is removed from their pile. Or the register goes off line. Or there’s some other issue where the manager is called over and they don’t know what to do either. There’s just no such thing as running in and out of Walmart to get a roll of tape.

The self-checkout lanes are the worst, because morons who don’t know how to scan and bag items and slide their debit card tie up that line.

I’ve never been to my Walmart and seen any of the 20+ registers closed. They are always all open and have 5+ people waiting in line.

Other stores, I have seen no registers open.
