when your plane has internet. The only time I’ve traveled in a plane with internet was the only time I didn’t have my laptop’s battery charged. FML.

The last time I was in a plane was 2 years ago, so my data may be outdated now, but I’ve never been on a plane with individual TV sets, and I used to fly quite often. I have had airplanes with those row TVs, but that’s not quite the same. I used to be lucky if we got those little radio things.

I’m Canadian and the few times I go stateside (Buffalo for cheap shopping) I drive, so I can’t comment on airlines in the US.

I’ve been on half a dozen airlines in the last five years, both domestic carriers as well as a couple based in southeast Asia and Australia. With one exception I haven’t seen a plane without these screens in five years.

The exception was a Q400/dash-8 turboprop regional flight, but you’re on the plane for an hour in that case, so it’s not an issue.

When I flew Singapore Airlines, JAL, ANA, Air China, and Air Canada, they all had seatback screens; it’s been a long time since I’ve been on a plane that hasn’t. However, I’ve not flown on any European airlines nor South American, so that may be where the difference lies.

Usually I’m not interested in the selection of movies and TV that they show, so I either switch to the classical music channel, or open my laptop to watch a movie/play a game. Or, more recently, just watch something on my iPod.

maybe it’s because of the fact that you’re going to watch A MOVIE, that consumes batterylife due to the ‘heavy’ use of your CPU…

Have you travelled internationally? Probably not. I took Alitalia, AirSwiss, AerLingus… and some more European airplanes about 3 years ago and not one of them had tvs. Also, I took Horizon Air last year and they didn’t have tvs either. Southwest doesn’t have tvs either.

You must take United or American and your “expertise” on the subject has no real meaning since you’ve probably been using the same airline.

Also, when I was traveling and I was taking United or American, I was lucky enough to watch “Failure to Launch” four times. WOOOOO… like that movie didn’t get old the first time.

every plane i’ve been on in the last five years or so has individual seatback TVs. They’ve been pretty standard on new planes for quite a while, and the older ones are being retrofitted. They’re individually tunable so you can change the channel if you don’t like what’s on. Some airlines actually recieve satellite TV.

Still, the laptop is kind of handy if you actually want to make the flight time productive…, although I usually end up playing solitaire for most of it.

This graph isn’t funny, it shows the truth, since playing a movie uses more power than browsing the internet or writing a document (usage of video card, constant movement on screen, etc) so it’s logical that the battery is drained faster

By the way, about every plane has TV’s so why would you care that you can’t use your laptop
