Oh, you kids these days think you’ve invented anything… this phenomenon FAR predates facebook. I’m guessing as long as we as a species have had the language and planning ability to say “Hey, you want to do _____ later this week?” this has been the case.

I always say maybe to all invites and show up at every one 15 minutes late. I eat some of the food and make the best jokes you hear at the place. Then just when you try to introduce your friend to me I leave unnoticed. Cool.
When I say “maybe,” it’s actually a cry for help. As in, “Help! I’m trapped in an attic with only dead roaches, spam, and rain water. The door is locked but the key is hanging on a wall just outside. You should see it if you are able to get past my heinous captors who are armed with flaming turds.”
How do you know what the best jokes are if you leave?
