I am so sorry for not using the correct term for this action according to American English. I had no idea what phrase you would rather me use instead so I went ahead and used the more common phrase according to the rest of the world.

To laugh at other’s misfortune is puerile. I have often wondered if those that laugh only fear that for themselves and try to cover that fear. Or maybe they are just jerks.

Too true, sadly. When my best friend’s house burnt down, the street was like a parking lot, full of cars that stopped and stared as my friend and her family lost everything but their lives. It’s disgusting.
I get the horror there, but don’t underestimate the power of video and photographing the accident. A guy sent me pictures he took of my burning car after I pulled over on the freeway smelling a burning electrical smell. At first I too thought, “thanks for taking photos and not helping” but in the end they proved invaluable in the insurance investigation. I was very lucky to have the photos or I would have been out a the price of a car.
