Since both animals are pack animals, the act you see as attention, is mainly a survival technique to get the food brought back from the hunt as quickly as possible. The faster they get there, the more food they will be able to eat before others. (even thought not all cats are pack animals, like lions, they are always born in a litter, and feel the need to fight over food) Now the cats and dogs differ in reactions because the difference is that we still feed our dogs when we get home because they have feeding times, where as cat owners are more likely to feed cats with a bowl of food in the morning, that last 1 to 3 days, this makes the cat less dependent on you for food.
