If “hot” means “someone I’m physically attracted to” it doesn’t make him an asshole; attraction, male or female, isn’t something you can turn on like a light switch just because someone is smart and nice.
Actually, one of the biggest problems I’ve encountered was with a guy who was (at first) smart and nice, but to whom I was not physically attracted at all. He didn’t understand or respect the reason that I only wanted to be friends, and eventually stopped being nice.

Insisting that people should ignore physical attraction entirely actually perpetuates the Nice Guy sense of entitlement – it’s implying that people have a moral obligation to date people who are smart and nice, even if they don’t find them attractive.

Other than that – yes, I do suspect that, for a guy like the poster, nice = strokes his ego and smart = talks about his interests.

I don’t find guys who call me 10 times a day annoying because I “want a challenge”. I find them annoying because I want some peace and quiet, because I don’t want instant lifelong commitment, because I want to be my own person, because they’re sad/pathetic/obsessive/need a life, and because people like that are often scary stalkers who will become abusive and dangerous after a while.
