boo Starbucks! It is definitely too big for it’s britches, as well, but they recently had to close down some, and Wal-Mart’s still going strong. I guess some people do have their priorities right. Hmm… Oh, but the natives of your area would probably argue that Starbucks started out in their neck of the woods, as to rationalize their feeding the corporate giant that it has become.

I miss Wal-Mart. I recently moved to the Portland area from the Houston area and they don’t seem to exist in this part of the world. The nearest one to me is a 30 minute drive away!

If you ask the people here why there are so few Wal-Marts, they’ll tell you that Wal-Mart drives out local businesses and shuts down mom and pop stores and yet, they love their Starbuckses (?) and their Win-Cos. Both of which do the exact same thing.

I’m not big with the shopping. I only go once every week or two to get the essentials, but I also don’t have the money to spend at all of the over priced stores that they have up here.

Also, I miss having some place that I can go and wander around at 3 in the morning when I can’t sleep.

Having worked in a Neighborhood Market (a Wal-Mart that is only a grocery store), I can tell you that Wally World sells plenty of healthy options. They are nowhere near as cheap as, say Spaghetti-Os and macaroni, but it’s still cheaper to buy there than anywhere else.

I worked in the deli and when I would shop other places, I’d kind of do my own price comparison research. I was amazed at what some places would charge for the exact same item.

Walmart has customers of all income levels. Some of it is the poor,no doubt. But there’s a reason some people with money manage to keep it to….

I think the correlation is that the food you can buy at WalMart is not the kind where you have a choice to be healthy. It is all food with a long shelf life, heavily modified and preserved, and not good for you. Yes, they sell it elsewhere as well, but you are limited in options if you’re only buying food there. Eating Spaghetti-Os and macaroni every night is not a healthy diet.

Target is just as bad as Wal-Mart in my opinion. The customers just think they’re better people, but a lot of the products are more expensive, and there’s less selection than what Wal-Mart offers. I hate both of these stores equally, and Starbucks is even lower on the list for me. There is nothing heavenly about retail giants. I will not stand on my high horse, however, and pretend that I’ve never been to any of these places, nor will I pretend that I don’t shop for certain things at Wal-Mart (diapers being the bulk of it), but I just get so fed up with the Wal-Mart shopper/Target shopper rivalry, as though one is any better than the other. Seriously, lame.

They do carry those things. You must not be looking hard.

They have the Amy’s Kitchen brand in their freezer section. Many of those products are Vegan, and all of them are Vegetarian at least. Amy’s doesn’t use meat in any of their foods. They also have vegan cheese (I’ve seen it with my own eyes!). Try looking harder.

But the soy cheese that they sell has milk products in it, to which my son has a major allergy (hives, difficulty breathing, etc.). And, he can’t stand the taste of soy milk. And, the refrigerated rice milk is less expensive than the shelf stable.
All that being said, I don’t go to Wally World much anyway, as there are a lot of places to go with wider selections and better prices/quality.

Oh, great Gu, this is so acurate. I once went into a WalMart with the intent to buy a bottle of Vitamin C. I came out with a new sheet set for the bed (since I had a cold and would be in bed…) a new dressing gown, a new pair of slippers, a new set of mugs, something to read, lots of treats to nosh on, and a bottle of vitamin C. I also learned NEVER to go shopping when I have a fever…bad idea, low attention span.

True, however he does have a point in that walmart was the big starter of buyers power, where the factories prices are dictated by the buyer, (aka: walmart) thus resulting in companies moving their factories to where things can be made for less money, so Walmart will buy from them. So something that costs walmart 50 cents to make, they can sell for 20, or 30, or whatever they want. All of this results in low costs at walmart, but sever loss of jobs, loss of exports, and I highly suspect a great cause of our financial situation. Only they media would never point that out, because one of it’s main sponsors, on every network, is the Walmart/Sam’s corporation.

Having a graduate degree does not make you not stupid. You are stupid, but I don’t expect you to understand that. You are basically a robot, conditioned to engage in shopping regularly to fill the void in your life. So you go to your Walmart or your Target or your mall every week if not more often and buy crap which you don’t actually need, did you already start to move your old crap into storage, or you just throw it away? That’s what American do: shopping and watching TV. That’s why you have to shop at Walmart, because you have to buy a lot of stuff often, so it would be expensive to shop elsewhere.

I would not shop at Walmart just for aesthetical reasons and I can afford it, because I don’t buy a lot of crap all the time. I can afford to buy toilet paper and toothpaste in my local store, because it’s a very small part of my budget. If I want to buy something more substantial, I go to a nice store and buy a quality product. If we are talking about groceries, buying food at Walmart, if it’s not just bottled water or something, will make you fat and sick. You are probably already fat, right? I’m willing to bet that most of the people who commented positively about shopping at Walmart are overweight. I’m not talking causation, but the correlation is there, I’ve been to Walmarts a few times.

Exactly. I’m not poor either, but I still go to Walmart for essentials. In many cases you’re buying the exact same made-in-China junk you could pay more for elsewhere.

Saving money on essentials means one has more to spend on stuff they want. Or, especially with this economy, just leave aside in case of a rainy day.

The wealthy don’t get that way by wasting money.
