So don’t live in Manhattan. 50k a year is pretty freaking amazing compared to what an increasing amount of Americans are taking home. I recall growing up in a household where Mom was the only one who COULD work at the time and only took home 18k a year. We still made it. I don’t want to hear a professor whining. If he took his sabbatical to write a text book and then charge an insane amount for it, he’d come out alright, I’ll wager.

No, he showed the ID. That’s been the consensus story since near the start, and the tape of cop’s radio conversation confirms that.

The fact that the cop teaches a class on (avoiding) racial profiling is noteworthy, but does not negate that aspect of the narrative.

The person who made the graph seems to assume that what _should_ impress people is a person’s car, house and clothes. Fail.

I’ve seen plenty of people driving around in cars they can’t afford, wearing clothes that cost WAY more than they needed to. I’m sure they’re impressing each other, but the rest of us are laughing our asses off at them.

The beauty of college is that you don’t “have” to put up with it. You paid to be there. You can do something about it if you really have a problem. For instance, you can try to find another professor teaching the same class.

It all depends on your department and what your specialty is. In my husband’s department, he does research all summer. In mine, we shut down and do freelance work if we want to.

The graph is perfect without the pervy remarks about college girls. That assumes that all college professors are male when in reality women are beginning to outnumber men. Ha!

If you get high in your office, you’ll get fired, just like any other job. Unless you can hide it well. Like any other job.

And your first sabbatical won’t be until 7 to 10 years after you start as a prof. Don’t go to grad school unless you love studying your subject matter for its own sake. It’s just not worth it otherwise.

Summers off can be true, depending where you are. My research university has 10 month appointments, and plenty of colleagues disappear for the 2 months they are not technically being paid.

And I hope you at least get free access to scholarly databases, web hosting, multimedia services (scanning, copying, printing oversized posters, etc…), etc…

I concur. Our professors work even in the summer, they always have to work on research or on graduate committees. And they can get paid pretty well too.

Professors are some of the hardest working people, they’re not really confined from 9-5. Lots of extra work involved.

I’m guessing you go to a weak school, most professors at my university make a considerable about of money. They also don’t take summers off, which also shows your limited education.
