Gay people already have the right to marry people they don’t love (people of the opposite sex)

If gay people get the right to marry the people they love, (people of the same sex)

then don’t straight people get the right to marry people they don’t love? (people of the same sex, again.)

So who’s getting “special rights”? It’s not like ONLY gay people could marry someone of the same sex. And that way EVERYONE could marry whoever they loved.

I think straight people should be able to marry people who they don’t love too

Ok, the open population of homosexuals does only count for about 10% of the U.S. population in the most current census that I’ve seen, of course they’re horribly skewed due to non-response but hey, whatever. Also, there is a small point here, as much as a I hate to admit it. It should be perfectly legal to spew hatred at anyone, it’s freedom of speech, plain and simple, not freedom of speech that’s intelligent or unoffensive. I don’t agree with what is being said, but I’d die defending the right for it to be said. Also, hatred only breeds hatred, I really wish that some of the groups under attack by the religious right would shame them by showing the tolerance and understanding that represents what the message of Christ was truly about, not hate, love, not condemnation, but support and understanding. I left the organized church because I didn’t want this hate-mongering to taint my faith.

Actually, I’d have to say that antisemitism CAN be construed as a kind of racism (racism is the act of discrimination against someone because of their biological heritage, i.e. white, black, Arab, etc.) because Judaism is intrinsically tied to family lineage. Not all Jews are of Hebrew descent, but many if not most are, and they are the ones most often associated with the religion, hence the stereotypes that we have big noses and bad hair and darker skin, these are racial stereotypes not religious or social ones like us being cheap or greedy.

Also, I do agree with the contradiction you pointed out, as well as being a bit afraid of the republican front runner. I don’t agree with gov’t sponsored abortions, but that’s another matter entirely, hell, I’m a libertarian, I don’t agree with much being gov’t sponsored, so it’s really not even a question of the morality of the act for me.

Seriously, “God” is not a religion. Deism is a religion, so is Christianity, some sects of Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Wicca, hell, under the definition, even the Cult of Cthulu fits (seriously exists, look it up) and all of them have at least one god. Now if they made it against the law to not say the Pledge of Allegiance, then I’d be tooth and nail fighting it, but anyone is free to opt out and as long as that freedom exists, no one is making you do anything, so you can’t really say your freedoms are being impinged, nowhere in the constitution does it promise that practicing your freedoms won’t make you uncomfortable.

A: This graph didn’t say that ALL christian conservatives that rail against gay rights are in the closet, simply that the most common things in the closet are christian conservatives that rail against gay rights and B: it’s pretty damn funny, also isn’t there something in the bible about not being easily offended? my 2 cents… I really don’t think straight people can understand being gay. I am straight and personally find the thought of being gay repulsive. That being said I know and am friends with people who define their sexuality as “gay” and don’t judge them for it… nor do I pretend to justify my sexuality or try to pretend to understand theirs. I also believe in god, but do not subscribe to any “organized” religion or “church” and our interpretation of the bible and evolution is just that…. an interpretation. take what you can from this life but live every day like it’s your last.

Nat – speaking as one of the non-christians (and yes, all I’m doing is giving you some belated support for your statement) – that’s true. Telling someone that they are wrong – just whacking them on the head with it – is the easiest way to push them away and make them dislike you/your beliefs even more. I was a christian, once upon a time, but the fact that I got told I was going to hell by my ‘fellows’ when i found out that I am, in fact, not straight – yeah, kinda killed what belief I had.
If someone had done what you did (actually talked like I was, you know, a thinking human being) I might even still be willing to believe. It’s hard to believe when you get treated awful.

LSHS, I have been following you throughout, and I cannot keep silent anymore. There are many things I could say, but I feel this is most important. This railing you speak of, this insistent political action which you say is so necessary is inconsistent with the teachings and actions of Jesus. One author that has been particularly informative for me is Gregory A. Boyd, who’s book “The Myth of a Christian Nation” directly addresses the issues of Christians using political power. We can debate that further if you like, but that is all I will say now.

You also seem to have an immense burden for those you see as sinners. However, even you seem aware that your method is not the most effective, and it certainly isn’t Jesus’ method. Smacking people around with scripture isn’t even effective when addressing fellow Christians. Those who do not agree with the Bible at all (i.e. non-Christians) cannot be reasoned with using only Scripture passages. They cannot see past the lies and the violence they have encountered from poor examples. If you really want to change the hearts and minds of, particularly, homosexuals, then implore you to get to know gay persons, become friends, form a community; then when you are like family, you can begin to work God’s mission in their lives. This is Jesus’ method. He ate with everybody (a big deal in his culture… like welcoming them into your family), both ‘sinners’ and members of the religious establishment, as well as everybody in between. And then, when he had welcomed them, did they begin to follow him. I promise you that this method will make you feel much better, and you will really see God work change.
