And the production requires special compounds and components which have to be shipped from all over the world and require a lot of energy to make, which makes the production of a hybrid have a larger environmental footprint than the production and use of several normal cars.
So next time you see someone drive a hybrid, remember to ask them: “Why do you want to pollute the earth?”

I bought a hybrid because gas prices were so high and I needed to save money. So your graph- fail.
I got a hybrid for the same reason, I was buying a new car anyway since some idiot had crashed into and totaled mine.

I got mine because I had a 20 y.o. truck that I shared with my Dad and the gas money/sharing was killing me.
Boy, you are going to be in for a HUGE suprise when you have to replace the battery then.
Actually, the Prius battery, along with the battery installed in all other hybrids (I can only speak for the Prius because I own one), is supposed to last the life of the car. I know someone with a 2003 Prius (the old sedan-style model) who still gets 50 mpg.
The battery itself actually has an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty. Reports of battery failure in the pre-2004 Prius are very low, and for the Priuses built after 2004, the replacement rate is even lower (some places claim that none of the later-model Priuses have had to have a replacement).
Toyota expects less than 1% of drivers to have to replace the battery over the lifetime of the car, which they estimate will be around 180,000 miles. I’d like to eek out a bit more (my Camry finally died at 250,000), but hey, 180,000 miles is still pretty okay.
I have seen 1 or 2 at over 200k. !st gen seems to begin acting up after 160k though. 2nd gen seems to keep going and going…
The part that is going to cost you money is the “new car” part. If you wanted to actually save money, buy a second hand car. Not a brand new one, and certainly not a Prius.
There are a few reasons to buy a Prius, but saving money is not one of them.
It will take the rest of your life to save in fuel what you could have saved by getting a sensible second hand car.
Well, we found that it would have saved us money to get the Prius. Our Camry (15/20 cty/hwy if we were lucky) had just completely crapped out on us after 250,000 miles, and we really needed a new car. Ultimately, it came down to the Mazda5, the Subaru Outback, and the Prius. The Mazda and the Subaru didn’t get all that much better gas mileage (around 20/25 cty/hwy for both of them), and when you configured them with all the gadgets, the Prius didn’t cost much more than the Outback. So, those 45 miles per gallon were ultimately the final push towards the Prius. (And yes, some of the used Outbacks we were looking at did cost more than the Prius.)
Time out. You’re choice to save money was between a Ourback and a Prius?
I take it back, you are definatly trying to save money by making smart consumer choices. Not only is the Prius not costly for comparative vehicles, but Subaru’s are up there with Land Rovers and Hummers with reasonable pricing for produts.
I now see that you’re not trying to be trendy by picking specific brands or products to be “cool” but to save money.

The Outback wasn’t really the choice to “save money.” That was something we were really looking to do, but we couldn’t find a used Outback (that is, a used Outback with less than 100,000 miles) and they were just too expensive for the relative amount of features.
We did the math. And Consumer Reports’ Annual Auto Issue from a year or two ago backed us up. Now, we were doing the “cost comparison” at around $4 a gallon (no I don’t live in California), so that was part of it.
A used Prius would have been a good deal… but we couldn’t find one that very day. We got lucky with finding the Prius. And it’s niiiiiiiice.
Yes, it was time to replace the car anyway. So I bought a used hybrid and saved a ton on gas. Plus I got a rebate from my work.
You’re right. The biggest reason people buy hybrids is to save money on gas. It’s actually cheaper for me to drive to work than take public transportation. I only need to buy gas about once a month.
I don’t even buy gas once a month any more. It is so infrequent, I forget which side the tank is on!

I was obcessed wtih military grade hummers back in the day. The ability to go over, rather than around anything has so much appeal living out in the sticks.
Then some asshole made the civi versions of the hummer, rappers started buying them… grrrr!
Bought hybrid for: fuel economy (yes, my motorcycle gets better mileage, but it’s miserable in the rain, or snow, or ungodly heat). There was also a nice, cushy tax credit if you bought one the year I did. Didn’t get a Prius, got a Civic Hybrid. It’s over 100K now, and I haven’t had any problems.

Look, every hybrid driver I’ve ever known has the car for pragmatic reasons. The persona of a hybird driver being a “douche” is such a massive misconception.
I just hope that those who buy a Hybrid know that they may not be contributing to helping the environment (some cars have to be shipped over here, using thousands of barrels of oil) and that they are not helping our economy (foreign car company).
I’d like to re-phrase and say “buy a Prius” instead of “buy and Hybrid” as I understand there are now some American car companies with Hybrids.

That’s why it’s called competition. Because sometimes manufacturers outside a country make a better product than the ones inside.

well, if the major US car companies could actually run themselves without paying out the arse to overpaid unions… their might be some competition. as it is, toyota now makes many modles in the US, including hybrids.

I can outsmug all of the Prius owners. I drive a Prius that I borrow from a carshare company. It’s even a locally owned nonprofit.
The partition for ‘looks cool’ needs to be way smaller. I think that’s the main reason nobody buys a hybrid; they look like crap.
Make a hybrid that looks like a mustang, and you’ll sell the f@ck outta that thing.

Honestly…who thinks they look cool? practically everyone drives them where I live…they are like a school uniform…but I don’t know anyone who thinks they are “cool”. Heck, no one talks about them, except people who don’t drive them and seem to take the fact that people choose hybrids and some kind of weird insult to no-hybrid drivers.

it’s completely true that the eco cars of today cause more pollution in thier footprint than a landrover disco does, and never pays itself back
purely because it’s so easy to source the parts for a disco they’re cheap and never break.
also, laptop pc’s, mobiles ( small devices ) claim to be more eco friendly than desktop computers but thier efficency per watt is less than a quarter of that of an i7 based pc.
then there’s battery waste, .. and i could go on but ‘eco’ is basicly just a selling point these days.. ( aka more lies )
