BS. It is not necessary to make grammatical (or spelling) errors – so don’t act like “everybody does it and only the a-holes complain about it. It’s annoying as all hell to read some of these posts.

There’s a difference between the person who makes a grammatical error by accident, and chat speakers. Your annoyance is justified on the latter.
I agree. Typos are one thing, but when someone legitimately doesn’t know how to use the English Language, It’s maddening.

It’s true that we all make grammatical errors sometimes, but in the last 5 years, I’ve never confused “your” with “you’re”, “their” with “there” or “they’re” or any combination of the three, etc.
Most grammar nazis get are annoyed with these main grammatical errors and if they were really that crazy about grammar then they would never make the mistake of misusing or misspelling any of these words.
So in short, your graph sucks.
I get irritated when someone (rightfully) points out a huge mangling of the language, like ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ or egregious misplacement of apostrophes or simple misunderstanding of what a word means, and then everyone jumps on that person for minor mistakes they’ve made. Making minor mistakes and pointing out large ones does not make someone a hypocrite. I for one am always ready to admit that I am not the mistress of grammar, but then again I’m not going to confuse a plural for a possessive. No, I’m not talking about someone who uses English as a second language. I’m talking about people who have supposedly been studying all their lives. Or should I say “All they’re live’s?

Really though, people need to pay more attention in English class. Condensing words I can live with, but how hard is it to type “you’re” instead of “your”? How hard is it to remember the differences? What is it, one or two extra keystrokes? Honestly. You’d think, if anything, that they would remember the difference from that episode of Friends where Ross tells Rachel after reading her letter, “Y-o-u apostrophe r-e means “you are”; y-o-u-r means your.”
Really, people need to take a linguistics class. You know there used to be contractions in German? Now they just mushed the words together and they don’t even exist anymore in Standard German.

1) Here, There and Everywhere – it’s a place and it’s “here” with a t in front.
2) They’re = They are…it’s a common contraction and contractions have apostrophes.

The “People who don’t care” section should overlap a much larger portion of the “People who Make Grammatical [sic] errors. . .” section. The majority of people who make grammatical/spelling errors on the internet and elsewhere do so because they don’t care. Yes, everyone makes small mistakes when typing quickly, but most of the people who complain about the sickening treatment the language gets on the web catch themselves, correct their error, and apologize.
It’s the a-holes who don’t care who go around writing things like “Your gay” or “wat’s teh problem with there car?”

I guess you don’t realize that language is fluid, do you? We’re not all sitting here speaking Proto Indo European! We’re speaking English, or at least some dialect of it, and please, do realize we don’t all have to speak Biology textbook English to get our point across (for the record, that’s called code-switching: you speak with your professor differently than you do with a 2 year old child).
Also, do not always consider the person at fault for the grammatical and/or spelling errors. It’s usually the school’s fault. Having attended a number of schools in my educational career I can assure you they all have extreme variations in their standards. Also, there are some people who may actually have problems with their motor and language skills. So you’re going to call the person retarded for that? Well, then you’re not any better than the person saying “your gay”, now are you?
I guess its so easy pointing the finger and automatically discrediting a person based on their spelling and grammar, I’ve just come to assume its the other party’s way of saying they concede and have nothing left to argue (at least when the discussion revolves around an argument). Just because a person isn’t a good speller doesn’t mean they’re an idiot in everything else.
Most people who make grammar corrections in forums like this are simply pointing out the error, not accusing people of being stupid or retarded (at least, from what I’ve seen). The person being corrected, however, often perceives a simple correction as being an insult. You are not necessarily a total idiot for making a mistake and chances are the one correcting you never intended to imply it. Some people have trouble accepting criticism, even when constructive. Everyone just relax, ok? (And maybe consider a quick proofread now and then…)
Did I say anything about anyone being retarded for making grammar/spelling mistakes? No. No, I didn’t. I called the people who don’t care that they’re making grammar/spelling mistakes a-holes, and I’m going to stand by that. Unless you’re somewhere like the LOL Cats website, you should use grammar/spelling that is correct to the best of your/your spellchecker’s knowledge.
I’m aware that not all schools teach good grammar and spelling anymore, by the way, considering the fact that my school system stopped teaching spelling after 6th grade and grammar after 7th. No one ever taught me what a gerund is, but that didn’t stop me from doing my best to learn how to use the English language properly. It didn’t stop me from making sure that my computer checks my spelling on everything I do, either, since my spelling is atrocious.
P.S. –The fact that language is fluid doesn’t make “your gay” any less incorrect, nor does it stop me from wanting to reply to people who post that statement in the comment section of any website with “My gay what?”

I’ve never found it hard to separate “your” from “you’re”. It’s simple in my oppinion! You’re is “you are” put together! Doesn’t get much easier!
But now I’m really concious about my spelling and probably made some error somewhere. Though, I’m Swedish and I always try to keep my spelling and grammar as good as I can, I actually encurage my friends to point out errors I do alot. I think it’s important, but I try not to complain unless it’s impossible to read. I help a friend out who personally asked me to correct him when he makes mistakes, but I guess he’s sometimes gonna make my mistakes then!
First of all, I want to say I am ONLY posting this because you said you encourage your friends to help spot and correct errors. You speak/type English far better than many, if not most, native speakers, and have NOTHING to be embarrassed or self-conscious about. I admire your multilingual talents, and have a lot of respect for the fact that you say you think it’s important – I wish more people did.
So this is NOT criticism or poking fun – far from it. If more native English speakers had your grasp of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, the internet would be a much less stressful place for people like me. (c:

I’m in the purple. Sometimes I make errors sometimes I don’t. If you can read what has been posted regardless if it was spelled correctly or not, “who cares”.

Bring on the haters, but there you have it. One person’s “error” is another person’s “correct.” It changes from historical period to historical period, too. It’s not like grammar is handed down from God. No need to pass judgment on a person just because of his/her use of grammar. There’s no correlation between intelligence and ability to control grammar. None.
I think there is. Memory is a branch of the intelligence, isn’t it? Problem-solving is usually the intellectual ability which weights the heaviest when one determines a person’s intelligence, but memory is still connected to iit (as fas as I know). All the IQ-tests I’ve taken have included memory-sections. There is also an awareness part, or something like that… (which is also connected with writing skills).
But by all means, having poor grammar doesn’t imply that you are less intelligent than one with good grammar. You can still score higher on other areas, or it could just be that you don’t give a damn. Those with correct grammar will usually be regarded smarter than those without, tho’. They seem more educated and that is often (wrongly) associated with intelligence.
Consider me in the green.
The “Don’t Care” group should be huge and intersect a lot more with the “Make Errors” group. This intersection includes a vast majority of teens on the Internet.

And now something that is barely considered: although most of the internet is english, a pretty big amount of people are not native english speakers. Like me. And it`s us who get jumped by grammar nazis all the time for obvious reasons. But maybe we just don`t have the time or nerve to learn english to a high degree just to “survive” in the comments sections of some picture sites. Ok GNs, go ahead and rip that post apart, i will gladly ignore you.

Grammar is one part of three that make up the correct usage of a written language: the other two are spelling and punctuation.
It seems that everyone online always uses the buzzword “grammar” to refer to any mistake in written English language, but it’s usually not the grammar, but the spelling and punctuation, that is incorrect.
My advice to users of the English language: call it grammar only if you know what grammar is (the study of internal structure of words and use of words in the construction of phrases and sentences) and if it is in fact grammar that is being violated.

One question: why would anyone make a sarcastic reply to your post (I refer to winternets)? It’s as if it’s a perceived slight that anyone might dare to reveal knowledge beyond one’s own. I thought that was how you learn things.
Oh, sorry about that. I really was trying to hide the fact that I really, deep down inside, want to be enlightened with distinctions that make all the difference in the world in 99.9% of conversation. For the chosen few of you who spread the Gospel of Grammar (or whatever you want to call it), that might be a cataclysmic error, but to us poor, unenlightened peons, we could care less.
My comment still stands; your reply doesn’t address what I wrote. If, as you claim, you “could care less” about it you would ignore it. Why even bother replying? To go to that trouble indicates that you do care and your tone indicates that what he wrote pisses you off for some reason. And you responded the same way to my comment (though I’m sure you could care less about what I say, right?
Seriously, I’m not trying to get your goat and I wasn’t before; I was genuinely puzzled about what was so terrible about the posting that it would induce a sarcastic response. Especially since you clearly write well yourself. I just sincerely don’t understand your reaction to either post.
It addresses your reply neatly. Maybe it isn’t your writing that needs work so much as reading, because I clearly said that nobody is interested in learning2grammar. It isn’t the post that fails, it’s the idea it includes. Think first, it won’t hurt… much.
And while I’m at it, sarcasm is cheap, and I’ve still got a solid stockpile to burn through. I can hardly think of a better target than the self-important tightarses who whine about other people’s grammar- in a comments section _on the Internet_. Still, you and Sa have my (relative, as you can see all too well) respect for being neither as self-important or tightarsed as some people.
The your/you’re and there/their/they’re have been discussed thoroughly, but how about this one: “could of” or “should of” or other variations. Makes me cringe every time. This one definitely counts as a grammar error, I’d say (according to Professor Sa) as it is a case of using the wrong word, not a simple misspelling. For those who make this mistake, the correct usage is “could have” or “should have” etc. I think this one stems from people writing it as it sounds since the contraction “could’ve” sounds like “could of.” Still, it just kills me when I see it, and I see it a lot. For me, my most common mistake is leaving out entire words when I type so I always try to proofread to make sure what I just typed makes sense. Even then I will often miss the missing word. Oopsie! But it’s ok if you want to correct me, I won’t get in a huff and accuse you of calling me dumb (unless you really do call me dumb, which is just uncalled for).
The “could of/have” instance is a common mistake and a good example.
Whenever I post responses or comments on the internet, I proofread what I wrote several times to make sure that I did not make a mistake. I believe this should be a habit of anyone who wishes to not make a fool of themselves.
Additionally, a trend that I’ve seen everywhere is the over-use of ellipses (usually not even ellipses, but long lines of periods). Users often use these in place of periods, commas, or new paragraphs. For example:
“hi i got your email……he said he can call me later……..but i didnt give him my phone number lol…………anywayz…………call me when you get home….okay bye…”.
Has anyone else noticed this? It appalls me. The users should be lashed for every extraneous period.
