SO2 and H2SO4 are not covered by the Kyoto Protocol. The greenhouse gases covered are: CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and SF6. And, the gas groups of HFC’s and PFC’s.

Sulfate aerosols are not entirely a bad thing, as they reduce the warming effect by allowing the reflection of solar radiation back to space.

Bulbachu, no one is saying that America is the only country fouling up the air, or the only country that needs to change. Those of us arguing for sustainability, sensibility, and cleaner air are talking about everywhere in the world, not just the United States.

I don’t think “everyone is like, ‘The polar bears will die because of Globa Warming!’” In fact, I’d think that anyone capable of using their brain can understand that it will affect all life, not just one animal.

As for feeding starving children, it is good to feed them, and it is also good to have a choice when it comes to sex and procreation. Unfortunately, the sad fact is that a great many women in many countries have no say in the matter. At all. It isn’t just as simple as dropping a pamphlet in the village that says don’t “screw like crazy when you don’t even have food for yourselves.” That is a shortsighted, ugly statement.

Okay, get ready for a little chemistry lesson. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is produced in industrial processes and by automobiles, because almost all coal and crude oil have sulfur compounds in them. Burning them combusts the sulfur compounds as well, resulting in the emission of SO2.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is released during the refinery of petroleum. While only about 12% of H2S emission is caused by humans, we could effectively eliminate our 12% by ceasing our dependence on petroleum.

Hydrogen (H) is an element, and is not harmful. In fact, you breathe this constantly. Without it, nothing on this planet could live, and there would be no sun. It constitutes more than 75% of the elemental mass of the universe (and since it is the lightest element, that means there is a LOT of it). It is almost comical that you have listed this as a “nasty emission” (or maybe it’s just sad).

Carbon monoxide (CO) is only present in trace amounts in our natural atmosphere, and very little of that is from volcano activity (at most, 2% of a volcano’s emission is CO). Significantly more CO is produced by humans as exhaust from (you guessed it) internal combustion engines.

Hydrogen chloride (HCl) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) are present in volcanic emissions only in trace amounts.

The vast majority of gaseous volcanic emissions are water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO2), and either SO2 or H2S, depending on the temperature of the emitted gases. Your argument that “volcanoes produce far nastier emissions” is ludicrous. There are maybe 50ish volcanic eruptions worldwide per year, and those produce a tiny fraction of the harmful gases in our atmosphere. Conversely, there are something like 600 million vehicles worldwide burning fossil fuels every day. And that doesn’t even begin to include industrial emissions. I’d say we produce far nastier emissions and in far greater quantities than any volcano. Maybe, just maybe, we should re-evaluate what we are doing to this planet and work to find ways to make our lifestyles more sustainable so that future generations can live here? Is that so horrible? Just my (extremely long-winded) 2¢.

Second, I will not denounce any belief out of hand, but having looked at Libertarianism i’ve reached these conclusions: It espouses more “freedom”, but this is A-B freedom, meaning that practically it will lead to Plutocracy and Corporate pillaging.

Being that the only reliable drive of private business is to make more money, and in a loose regulatory environment this naturally leads to the rich individuals getting richer and companies taking “liberties” counter to the public good.

Regulation and gov’t control (in appropriate situations) is needed to keep capitalists from getting carried away and forgetting that their role is to drive the improvement of our civilization and improving the lives of our people, not dominating it.

This brings me to explain my A-B freedom statement, under plutocracy and corporate governance the majority of the population is still being oppressed – just not by the government. A-B-C freedom is giving up a superfluous freedom to grant true freedom – I give up the freedom to shoot random people in exchange for the freedom to not get randomly shot. There is a net gain of freedom.

Similarly, I give up the freedom to MAYBE, ONE DAY, “IF THINGS TURN OUT” become a Trillionaire Oligarch in exchange for a far better chance of becoming a Millionaire Douchebag with a cottage and a Mercedes. This is only achieved through a very purposeful and delicately balanced gov’t system of Progressive taxation, Universal services and aid, resulting in the most net freedom for all on account of having a level playing field.

In short, I don’t mean to disrespect you, you are probably a fine individual, I merely offer that you aren’t looking deep enough at the realistic facts.

P.S., for a real life example, come to Toronto! We still have rich people, they live mostly in Rosedale and Oakville, just slightly less rich (but still PRETTY rich), but way less poverty (like 1/10th the shootings of Chicago, no offense)

I believe the point (and Ayn Rand’s point) is that we should be able to keep what we earn. We owe it to no one. We have the freedom to contribute to the charities of our choice, and it should not be taken from us to support social causes.

For me greedy is: the more that I can earn, the more that can go to my causes.

I want to know what Lillith considers humane. If we “know” the enemy has information that could save lives, should we start cutting off fingers? And then if we know he has info but still isn’t giving it up, maybe cut off an arm, or shock him. I mean, as long as we’re being “humane” about our torture, it’s ok, right??
