I think that Stephanie Meyer actually touched on the period issue, I can’t remember which book. I think she mentioned that Edward was too ‘gentelmanly’ to bring it up but that it was, essentially, dead blood and not as appetising as fresh blood. Sort of like stale bread when faced with a gourmet meal. If you’re resisting the gourmet then the bread isn’t going to throw you over the edge.

I’ve never really thought of Edward as a pedophile though. (I actually enjoyed the books, but it does get annoying when screaming, raving fangirls start giving it virtues it doesn’t have and thus turn it into an absolute farce) I have, however, considered the fact that Bella could fall into three different categories. Gerontrophile, necrophiliac and terminally stupid.

As for her physical maturity -guys other than Edward did find her attractive. Girls such as Jessica and Lauren thought of her as competition. It’s unlikely that so many teenage boys would demonstrate pedophile (pedophillic?) tendancies. Or that girls would find a girl who looked flat and overly young to be a threat. Of course, it IS a small town…

If you really want to get into technicalities…
(Yeah, I know I’m a year late. I couldn’t sleep and debates like these amuse me.)
The ‘fact’ that Bella is post-pubescent was never actually established. I realize she’s seventeen, but there are, as previously discussed ‘late bloomers.’ Age is not a definite determinant of someone’s physical development.
I would think that most would agree that the most definite marker of when a girl has passed puberty is menstruation, but in the entire book series, and the total… was it two years? That Edward and Bella were dating, none of the books ever mentioned Bella having a period. It was only breifly touched on in the fourth book, but in absence, not presence. While I realize a prepubescent girl could not have conceived a child, this is no indication that she was past puberty two years prior to said conception

So, for all anyone knows, the guy’s a pedophile. (Or, paedophile, if you’d like)

And if you think about it, period = blood
In a school full of teenaged girls, the odds that every single shcool day is not someone’s ‘time of the month’ are slim to none.

Compared to a papercut, it’s actually quite a bit more blood.
In a school attended by five ‘vampires.’

Disgusting? Yes.
Problematic? A definite yes for all involved

Yet another reason angsty highschool vampire stories are completely implausible.
(In addition to the fact that, of course, the creatures in question only exist in myth.)

Ok, seriously – “attentive” is cooking dinner when you know I’m working late, or knowing what kind of book I’d like for my birthday. It’s picking up jasmine tea when I have a cold. So being called such names at 14 or 18 or ANY age isn’t hurtful? I was called a “bully”, “MEAN CRUEL ASTONISHINGLY ANNOYING”, ect. If she can’t handle mean things being said to her, she shouldn’t start saying mean things in the first place. We were willing to play nice, but she wanted to play hardball and now she has to deal with those consequences or cry for an adult to come help her. You’re not doing her any favors by stepping in on a situation that would make any normal person shrug it off and move on with thier lives. If she can’t handle being on the Internet all by herself, she probably shoudn’t be using it in the first place. We aren’t the ones who need to grow up here.
