I would hate that. I am on this site right now because I literally have NOTHING to do. I like to be challenged in my work, but after a while I get tired of begging for projects (because it never gets me anything that takes more than half an hour anyway).

And now my input from the point of view of a busy receptionist…

70%

Working while being spied on by nosy co-workers who are reading the mail in other people’s boxes.

10%

Being talked to (by co-workers and clients alike) as if I’m unintelligent due to my position.

Trying to discreetly listen to online radio (Like everyone else) while people watch my screen.

Dropping everything I’m working on to fix/divert your … CRISIS. FYI… the paper is in the same location as the previous three times you asked.

Trying to answer the phone and/or concentrate while you carry on your non-work related conversation over my desk.

Taking a BEFORE I SNAP break at my desk (oxymoron..I know) while co-workers gawk at me “not doing anything all day” in spite of the piles of work that somehow “magically” get done.

Working for free serving clients/co-workers that aren’t considerate of the fact that we close at 5p. Oh yeah! and occasionally paying daycare fees for being late.

Wondering if I will ever escape a thankless low-paying job where one is chained to their desk and tortured with a thousand petty annoyances. Luckily I complete my degree soon… and yes I do my homework on MY time.

receptionists are also made to tell untruths for others when they answer the phones. eg. ‘he’s in a meeting’, ‘she’s at a clients office’, ‘he/she’s not at her desk just now’, ‘they’re out of the office today’. receptionists also eat at their desk sometimes, which i think is an unsightly spectacle to behold. where do they think they are? a cow field?!

i’m a receptionist and the gist of this graph is correct in my case (though no Twilight books and no discussing my personal life). and i hate my job. try spending a year at a job without doing anything productive. and no one ever thanks you for doing yr job, there’s little to no positive reinforcement.

I’m a receptionist at my college athletic office and this is pretty accurate…in my defense, I only started reading Twilight because they’re really long books. I also watch “Rescue Me” on Hulu and constantly email my friend who holds another mundane clerical job.

Wow. I realize this graph is meant to be humorous, but man, it really ruffled my feathers. I’m a medical secretary, and I run my ass off and deal with patients in crisis and never-ending phone calls all day long. It’s one of the most stressful, thankless pee-on jobs out there. This is a great way to spread a false impression of people in the clerical field. Nice job, graph creators.

As a Director of First Impressions of 7 years, I must say that I find this chart most amusing. Reception work is harder than it looks (especially in a busy firm such as my own with NO direct dial) and sane bosses allow receptionists to have a little fun at their desks so we don’t go postal on people who don’t appreciate what we do. I check this site, for example, as a way to keep my mind off of the craziness. It’s part of my morale. And as long as the phone is actually answered, packages are signed for and guests are taken care of, who cares what we do to pass the time? I’ve co-produced THREE plays from my desk. You know, the thing I actually have a degree for. And my bosses allow this sort of thing because they know it isn’t a pox on their image. If anything, it shows that they know how treat people who don’t make near as much as everyone else in the office VERY well. Good people.

I used to work in a reception on the afternoons, and it was deeeeadd (most of the time) so imagine summers!! XD (I have to admit that’s were I read most of the Breaking Dawn book.. and many others.. )

Now I work in other company, also in the reception, and there is a lot of work, so I cannot even try to concentrate on reading a book.

Browsing through GraphJam/LolDogs/Lolcats/Failblog, that, I can handle.. =P

I was that girl…I miss that job…. (swap Twilight for any other book I was currently reading.) I knew I was going to enjoy it when I showed up on the first day, my boss spots the book tucked under my arm (long bus commute) and says, “Oh good, you brought a book. I didn’t want you to be bored.”
