Although I agree with this sentiment, as a going-into-highschool student with AD/HD, I find that taking medication really helps me where nothing else (Therapy, HW schedules, etc.) did. Since second grade, my HW used to take me around 4 hours to finish, and I was at the bottom of my math class simply because I couldn't concentrate long enough to copy the problems off the blackboard. After I was diagnosed in fifth grade, I freaked out about the idea of pills, but they really help. (And they put a SERIOUS dent in my HW time ^w^) I know everyone needs different things, but I also know that you don't have to exclude any possibilities, including that of medications.

That said... This graph is absolutely spot-on! I laughed aloud, literally.

I kind of understand where you're coming from. I have a sister who's (whose?) very intolerant about my brother and I, who both have ADHD. She constantly says mean things about us or to our faces because quirky things we can't help are "stupid" in her eyes.
I bet everyone would like to know what "normal" feels like, but if we did...
... Nobody would be special :)
Have a nice day, reasonable man. I hope people treat you better.

Hmm,I'm in the mood for a little experiment. Can I make people believe that the mental capabilities of those diagnosed with Aspergers and/or ADD are on par with others? By which I mean: people describing themselves as "normal" and are often looking down on me, for I have been diagnosed with Aspergers.

I'm getting tired of being mistaken for mentally retarded, unfunny, etc. Although I should probably admit to being mentally retarded. Because I have been so mentally retarded I didn't even know I should be mentally retarded and incapable of anything. Therefore, I grew up to be an intelligent civilian instead that even contibutes to society from time to time . My bad, I will correct this grave mistake immediately. Have a nice day.

Very perceptive Megan. ADD is actually a gift, with a learning disability attached to it. While those of us who suffer from the symptoms of add/adhd have trouble focusing, and are prone to very debilitating lifestyles, we tend to be brilliant thinkers in sometimes multiple areas. Like was said in Good Will Hunting, when we look at numbers, ideas, whatever area we are gifted in, its not like we have to learn, we just know. It just makes sense.Good diet, exercise, lists, and surrounding oneself with patient people who love us help us nurture those thoughts, but mostly we have to remember that its not that 'they' cant keep up with us, our crazy little brains just move too fast even for us sometimes. Happy Halloween to all! Youre not alone.

Correction: Doodling has nothing to do with YOUR manifestation of ADD/ADHD. Check out "You mean I'm not lazy, stupid, or crazy?" by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo - it's got some excellent descriptions of common personality types who have ADD. They're fairly distinct, and if you're one of those types, the other types might seem a little foreign to you, and almost might not seem like "real" ADD - but just because it isn't your experience doesn't mean it's not legitimate.

Almost everyone with ADD/ADHD develops some way to help them focus. Some people listen to loud music when they're studying because as distracting as another person might find that to be, those people find it actually helps them concentrate. I used to doodle as a kid, but once I had a computer, I played games like solitaire and snood, and I listened better. Keeping one part of my mind constantly and actively engaged with the game kept the rest of my mind awake and alert, so I could better concentrate on what was being said in class. I also tried retyping my notes from other classes during class, but that was a little more distracting. That's not me being bored in class and using it as an excuse, that's me keeping note of how many times I caught my attention wandering in a class period, how many points I missed in class when comparing my notes to a classmate's, etc when I did and did not use computer games.

As I was only diagnosed with ADD a few years ago before I got into vet school (after most of my schooling was over) it almost made me wish I'd known I'd had it when I was younger. Then I realized that having ADD and not knowing about it just made me try 10 times harder to get everything right, and made me the person I am today, who doesn't give up, who takes responsibility for her actions, and who follows through on what she says she'll do, no matter what it takes. I wouldn't have wanted the social stigma of growing up with ADD (I don't have Asperger's as far as I know, I'm just socially clueless); trying to fit in for me was hard enough without knowing about it.
