A class of 300 students get an average of 25 points on a 125 point exam. Its the professor’s fault. Some portion of that class has to have studied hard, and with 300 kids you have at least 3 who dedicated their lives to passing this course. they still got less than 50%. Its the professor’s fault.

You could change it to two circles: Pink: what the teacher presented and green, what the student learned. I know higher education is not a baby sitting service. By the time your in university you really shouldn’t need the teacher to go through every step. The idea is to learn problem solving. Nothing you ‘learned from rote” will be used in the real world.

I have a 4.0, but I also take a class where the PSY prof. wants you to answer which specific part of the brain affects what and how a lesion would affect that, none of which was even IN the book. I have online classes and refuse to cheat by using the internet / Google during a test, so I barely scraped by with a 75. These exams are out there.
I have also, seen the other side where people skip class for football games and show up to a straight forward exam that the majority breeze through, and they fail miserably.
Bottom line – It is a joke aimed at the people who HAVE had the experience, and to us it is amusing. (yes, engineer, even us “garbage” business majors lol)
To the prof. & TA? Obviously, not so much…

So, since you’re a high and mighty TA, and consequently a student, and getting dumber every year, do you feel no responsibility towards your students and their failure. You should probably attribute that in some part to poor instruction on your part and not a failure of base intelligence on the part of the student. Fact remains college acceptance is harder than ever to achieve, leading to a more intelligent student base.
Also, Universities do not promote, as a whole, instruction, but research on part of their professors. Most instructors are, quite frankly, too damn busy trying to publish research to attain tenure/keep a position, that they don’t care about instruction. This means they lose sight of their own material, lectures, and content, causing charts like the one above to be true. Quite frankly I don’t care if you’re TA, you’re still a student, one who seems to have an ego problem because they were placed in a position of instruction. Your job, or what your job should entail, is instructing, not writing off students before you even try to gauge their potential.
In other words… Shut up it was a joke… can the ego.

I’ve just completed my first exam for the semester … we were told that the exam was going to be 40 multi-choice and 6 short answer questions …. it was 60 multi-choice, 14 short answer questions (to be completed in the same time frame) and there were questions on the exam that was about content none of us ever remember learning.

So for me, this diagram is pretty acurate…

I have to agree with this guy, I am doing a PhD now and my experience from under and postgrad is: professors don’t like to have a high fail margins. Its bad on them and on there department. They tend to take approx 50% of an exam out of the tutorials or in class problems (seen, but values changed), the other 50% is for your brain to work out (test of competency).

The most noteworthy thing I have found in my college career, is that undergraduates seem to have this concept that if a lecturer doesn’t cover it ‘fully’ then it cant!! come up, bulls**t!!. The lecturer only need mention a topic and it can come up. It is you who has to do the background reading and also develop on it by doing questions. Just coping what the lecturer did in class is pointless, it just means you have a degree in how to copy a guy from a whiteboard/blackboard/chalkboard for 3-4 years.

And when I say mention I mean, if he gives out a course overview then he has mention all he needs. You should be happy he is lecturing you in-depth.

Remember the lecturer is really only supposed to give you the basics of a subject, your responsible for its development in your mind.

Same. I’m only in Year 10, but I’m taking some of my GCSE’s early, and I’ve been predicted A’s and A*’s in all that I’ve done up until now…

It does kind of suck that the exam board set the questions, and we’re expected to know all the answers, regardless of whether or not we’ve actually ever been taught the material.

You can study all year and still not know what’s being asked on the test. I took the AP American History exam a few days ago and none of what I bothered studying was on the test. All the questions were designed to test our knowledge of what feminists and black people had been doing. Now, I don’t object to a few questions like that but when that takes precedence over questions about political/intellectual/religious developments that affected all Americans, something is wrong. Shifting a narrow focus from one side to another doesn’t fix the problem.

Very, very true. I took my History Exam today and absolutely NONE of the questions were things we studied this entire year. Some of the questions were about things I learned last year, and some questions were about things we hadn’t even been planning on studying this year.

It’s called a bi-modal distribution. It happens when the teacher taught the material, and half the class doesn’t bother to study. If half the class did well and the other failed, obviously the information was available. It’s because people expect tests to be a regurgitation of the homework or some simple examples, and don’t bother using their brains to work through problems with more than one layer to them.

Granted, I live in England and I’m not in uni yet, but…

Our exams are set by an exam board who have nothing to do with the school. They just give the school a list of things we need to learn. There’s about 5 different exam boards as well…

I dunno about in America, but the teachers aren’t the ones who set the final exams. Not here anyway. Which unfortunately makes this graph pretty accurate XD

And before I get a bunch of douchebags asking me how thick I am in order to make a point, I do actually get A grades…
