  1. Satchel says:

    Twelveth?

  2. benfranklin says:

Um…where’s “being a new parent” on there??? I have an 8 month old and I NEED a nap!

  3. Dex says:

I agree, but the X-axis should have been Kindergarden, elementary, middle, high school, and College. Would have fit better. That’s just me.

  4. ... says:

I’m glad my taxes go towards scholorships for these same people.

    • Dex says:

Are you forgetting that your precious government bailout that your politicians voted on will cause our generation grief for the next 50 years. Selfish bastard.

      Sorry for my bluntness (word?).

      • PaulM says:

Caused by your precious previous administration’s greedy policies? Causing two wars that have bankrupted the country while unscrupulous lenders and Wall Street tycoons were in bed with Bush and his cronies? Is that what YOU’RE forgetting?

        Idiot bastard.

        • V Gard says:

LOL its not the wars that bankrupted us, it was out of controll spending and massive budgets, IN BOTH ADMINISTRATIONS! Yeah, the greedy investors did it too, but it wouldn’t ahve beena problem if we just let them sink or swim on their own instead of subsidising them and paying for their bonuses.

          • The L says:

Actually, much as I hate to admit it, it would have been a problem. See, those same greedy investors have such a ridiculously huge market share (which wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the deregulation in the 80′s) that THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN US DOWN WITH THEM.

When those same investors spent the bailout money on themselves instead of their ailing businesses, the government should have stepped in again and asked for our money back.

          • Cybely says:

There was a surplus when Clinton left office, you moron.

    • lola says:

I think I owe my sold my soul to Sallie Mae, not so must the tax payer, but Advanced statistics , does work better than Ambien.

    • TheHappyBerry says:

Because naps totally equal not productive. Guess I probably shouldn’t have had those naps daily while I was in college. Maybe I could have pulled off a 4.0 instead of a 3.5….or not.

  5. Reb says:

I think the more accurate graph would show Kindergarten at a higher degree of nap level, no nap level in middle school, and the rest as is.

This graph did not make me laugh.

    • Lucy says:

Kindergarten kids don’t need naps. The parents and teachers need the kids to take naps for the sake of their sanity.

    • faunablues says:

Yeah, this would be better if it was a parabola.

    • Cybely says:

I laughed. But not because the graph was funny…. “Twelveth.” How does someone even make it to college not knowing that it’s “twelfth” not “twelveth.” This graph belongs better on failblog.

  6. Syllable Nazi says:

Twelveth? And how about separating kindergarten by syllable instead of just randomly picking a letter?

  7. Andrew says:

This graph is FAIL. The importance of a nap cant be measured in %, and evidently when you 100% need to nap it means you have to do it in class. Also, many people took naps in Kindergarden. . .it was called Naptime. This graph was a long way around saying “I sleep in class at College”. That’s great, I’m sure all your friends find that hilarious. I’m not sad about paying taxes that go towards scholorships, this kid obviously didn’t get one or his graph would have been funny.

    • The L says:

      KindergarTen. ScholArships.

      That is all.

    • ClickClick says:

I slept in class at College last night, myself.

Luckily, the teacher waited until I was coherent before he threw a question my way. !!!

    • LHLD says:

ahem. kindergarten is only half as long as the proper school day. however, there is NO napping at kindergarten. most children don’t take naps when they’re 3 or 4, never mind once they’re old enough for proper “sit here and do homework” settings.

and honestly, i’ll take a 5th year of college over graduating “in 4 years or less” if it means i’ve made friends and had fun. no scholarships here, all loans. which i now can’t find a job to pay off… because the 5 years i spent in college working towards the fancy piece of paper? pretty damn useless – but they keep telling me it’s the economy, not me. is that the new breakup line?

  8. Spaz says:

Maybe a better title would have been,
“The importance of hedonistic and narcissistic naps needed due to my inability to regulate my freedom and bodily impulses.”
    -
Actual kids NEED naps, college kids need to grow the f*** up.

    • Cosmo says:

Jeeze, everyone gets tired. There is a difference between napping because from being a lazy bum and napping to catch up on sleep you didn’t get the night before from working on research papers and projects, and graduate school applications. Someone sounds a little bitter…

    • scurzy says:

Unless you’re putting yourself through college (working at the same time to pay for it), college is a life of leisure.

When you get out of college, you’ll know what I mean.

(By the way… “expected to be social creatures”? No, that’s a choice you make.)

      • TheHappyBerry says:

Yeah, but it is pretty darn hard to make it outside of college if you don’t make those social connections. I’m not advocating being out drinking every weekend. But, if you don’t join clubs and study groups and hang out with friends, you lose opportunities for the future and have a miserable college experience.

    • Spaz says:

      “40 our work week”
I’m glad college is working out well for you. = )

    • lola says:

Lighten up., I know some people that worked close to full-time in Grad school (they still are a “little off”-come to think about it). I personally would nap in my little office-dungeon i was supplied for T.A.’s.

    • Cybely says:

Try going to law school. I study about 60 hours a week. That doesn’t count going to class.

    • Fly says:

      1) In my experience, the 2 hours of recommended study time is NEVER enough to do everything you’re expected to do. Try having a 3 credit lab class that requires upwards of 12 hours of at-home work a week.
      3) So we’re only allowed to talk about majorities here?
      4) Not being a member of an academic club really hurts a resume. You can only afford to come off as antisocial if you’re a genius.
      5) I just graduated after working part time and going to classes full time. I’ve been hospitalized because I didn’t have time to eat/sleep. It was NOT a cakewalk. Speak for yourself.

      • Somebuddy says:

        1) Yes, I had 2 labs at my undergrad institution that required much more than 2 hours of recommended study time (for writing lab reports/research/etc.) In my opinion, those two were the exception rather than the norm.
        3) Sarah referred to the majority as well, by using the word “most.” That’s what I was referring to.
        4) I’m quite certain that by “social creatures,” Sarah meant “going out” (bars, parties and the like), not any kind of academic club. When people sit down to look at resumes, they don’t care that much about some academic club you were part of in college. Because you were a member of an academic club does not prove you are antisocial. You can become a member of NSCS by having good grades and filling out some forms…this doesn’t make you any more social or give any more weight to a resume.
        5) If you were hospitalized because you didn’t have time to eat or sleep, you need to learn to manage your time better.

  9. LUDER! says:

    twelveth comment

  10. Seddah says:

Man, I need a nap right now. One more exam and I am officially graduated!

  11. cherylface says:

It would have been mildly better if kindergarten wasn’t 0%. But it’s still a pretty stupid graph. While I have been tired in many a college class, I have never actually taken a nap in one; you pay to take those classes!

  12. scurzy says:

What does it mean for something to be 20% important, or 40% important, etc?

  13. eldestFLeTcH says:

heh, maybe someone should construct a 3-D graph with the three(x,y,z) variables being X=work+school(research/studying), Y=age, and Z=length of naptime
i remember reading somewhere about how Einstein thought that naps were an important part of ones life and that a long sleep period(8+ hours) was actually more harmful for a person than a semi-long sleep(4~6 hours) with a few naps(30m ~ couple of hours) interspersed throughout the day

  14. LHLD says:

ehrm. this should be a W. with the first valley being elementary-middle school years and the second valley being “time between college and having kids” (that is, if your family rolls that way… traditional-like). the peaks? infancy, college, and having kids.

  15. JM says:

This chart is only shown on the school level because we’re all still bitter from the time when they forced us to nap in kindergarten when we didn’t need to, while forcing us to stay awake in high school when we desperately needed sleep.

By college we know how to judiciously (or not-so-judiciously) skip class to get extra sleep. ;) As for you pregnant and new parents… sorry, you’re out of luck. But I promise I’ll do all I can to help my wife when she’s pregnant! :D

  16. tracylee says:

OK, those of us who were employed professionals up until today appreciate naps as adults, and I’m about to take them up on a daily basis!

  17. Marco Polio says:

How true, except I pay attention in class. :O

  18. Olavur says:

TRUE! I slept through three classes by accident today… But at least I made it to my early one.

  19. anonymous says:

dude you wrote “twelveth”…looks like you overestimated the importance of naps during spelling class

  20. Hilda274 says:

This isn’t very accurate because naptime in kindergarten is just as important in college!

    DUH.

  21. Anna says:

the schools have it all wrong they should give you naptime in high school, not kindergarten. kindergartners sleep like twelve hours a night anyway, they don’t need any more sleep
