The correct word to use is “worse” because you are comparing two objects; the life of the supposed person on the other end of the ‘Intertubes’, and the hypothetical transformed life after he or she gets a cat. There is no way that it could be used in the superlative degree since you are offering only two versions of life.

Agreed. Shelter animals are so sweet. Over my life I have had 5 cats from a shelter, and 2 from a breeder, and there is no difference in temperament whatsoever. Plus, you can often negotiate with the shelter to have the animals fixed and given shots for free or much less before you take them home.
