Actually chimmeychango, you are quite wrong. Three out of the five mythbusters, including Adam and Jamie, have worked on the set of Star Wars to build the robots and all the electrical items. How is that not a background in science? Also Grant is one of only three people in the world who can operate R2D2. I watch Mythbusters and when I am in school I find that about 99.99% of what they say is true. If I were you I wouldn’t be slamming a show about its intellectual level if I couldn’t even practice correct capitalization.

It might be anecdotal, but people get into the scientific fields not because of the science programs on the television (generally, at least). They get into them because of the idealization of them in movies, books and television. How many archeologists are there because of Indiana Jones, versus a Discovery documentary. That is the big issue, I think. Getting people to see that you should actually try, and you don’t have to be a Ph.D. in astrophysics to do anything approaching science, which has always been the focus of my science teachers, but truthfully how many students listen to their teachers?

You know, they welcome criticism of their processes and tests. If you believe that one of their conclusions is incorrect and can argue why, they’ll retest. They do it all the time.
Apparently their standards are much more rigorous than the show presents. They just can’t fit all of their findings and processes into a one hour show. And besides, the 95% of people discussed above probably wouldn’t care. Anyway, I watch it when I can and find that most of their conclusions mesh pretty well with previously established findings from more scholarly sources.

you just made my point for me. bad science distorts reality for the average person, making it easier for the unscrupulous to take advantage of them. democracy requires an informed and informed, educated, and involved populous.
if we keep telling half truths by showing people half science half funjutainment
we will have no truth left at all. i think its better to not try to involve science and just blow things up. and let me say i actually enjoy watching the show myself.
it is fun, they are smart and goofy guys, and the blow stuff up.

You are aiming too high. MOST people believe magnets have curative properties. MOST people believe St. John’s Wort has medicinal value. MOST people believe that tapping on the top of a tin can will prevent it from spraying when opened. Any show that advocates actual experimental learning over blind ignorant acceptance is a good thing.

I agree. As a scientist myself, Mythbuster experiments in general just make me sad. Or rather, the supposedly solid and definitive conclusions they come up with from a not-so-solid, not-so-scientific “experiment”.

It’s called making learning fun. Sure it may not be “by the book”, but the concepts are there, and it is probably the most educational thing the average person will see on any given day.
