Besides, real Rasta dreadlocks are done totally different than college-student dreads. One is a hairstyle that has appropriated by a sub-culture the other is a religious practice that is a sign of devotion and subservience to the will of God (or Jah, if you prefer). It is an interesting religion if you look into it and the practice of all-natural dreadlocks is interesting.

The same practice is found in some Hindu sadhu orders and Sufi fakir orders. Related is Sikhism and its practice of uncut and wrapped hair. Buddhist monks and nuns often shave their heads while some Catholic orders are given tonsures. Hair has a lot of connotations religiously even in the West where we denigrate these practices. Instead we now grant hair only the application of being part of our visual identity and a matter of grave concern for our careers and social lives.

The peculiarities around hair are limitless, the world over. Someone should make a professional study of it. Nerds like me would read it.
