Before you try to claim that you’re immune to your own criticism because you don’t “sound like a dimwitted buffoon”… that’s not really the case. Throwing your weight around as an ‘intellectual’ on a site like this one when your only credentials are long words and a snarky attitude doesn’t impress anyone but yourself, and in fact makes it look like you’re overcompensating.

As for your evaluation of the graph, it’s only half-correct. It makes no _logical_ sense, but as “any dullard” should know, logical isn’t the only kind of sense. With just a little bit of imagination, the meaning becomes clear. The one on the left is the pessimistic because it comes up from below, representing the ‘low’-ness of the half-empty estimation. The optimistic graphing on the right, of course, is the opposite. It doesn’t stand up to a literal reading at all, but it does stand up to one with imagination and, dare I expect one, a sense of humour.

I submit that the people who understand that the joke doesn’t make sense are smarter than those that do think it makes sense. Period. If you still find it funny, fine. Maybe you’re not an “idiot”. But you can’t tell me it wouldn’t have been funnier if it had been a functional graph (while still “breaking the rules”).

As for myself, I could be learning more random facts I have no use for. I just don’t see the point. If I have use of information, I look it up. Knowledge is not an end in itself.

Notice I didn’t call the person who made the graph an idiot. No need to. That person had a great idea but failed in executing that idea. That’s not a big deal. But to have someone explain to you the mistake that was made and still believe the graph works… That’s stupidity.

You think I don’t have an inkling of humor? Based on what? A couple posts I made about a joke? Since when was humor required in a post-joke analysis? That’s like saying everyone on SportsCenter is weak because they don’t tackle each other during a post-game analysis. I’d wager a large sum of money that I am funnier than you and I’d be willing to test that in front of an indifferent audience. Sure, you could say the same thing and it really doesn’t mean anything since this is the internet, but know inside— deep down inside— the funniest people in the world are some of the most intelligent, and I’d add to my wager that they wouldn’t find this graph funny either.

And on the point of grammar, no one is being a grammar Nazi. Studies show that your laziness actually causes the reader (especially those who know grammar well) to inadvertently feel as though he made the error himself. It’s a subconscious hiccup in the mind and it is justification for a complaint of frustration and annoyance.

You’re stupid and it isn’t your fault. We know that. You don’t have to tell us. But please… Don’t try to compete with us on an intellectual level. It seems like a simple request, doesn’t it?
