  1. FBR says:

    I don’t get this.

  2. LimEJET says:

    Awesome.

  3. flip says:

the best i’ve seen yet. thank you.

  4. observer says:

Not really funny per se, but still satisfying. Good job.

    • Petrograd says:

      I agree with you.

I like how he broke the diagram rules to make something of his own.

Unlike the “creative” Venn diagram that just showed lack of understanding for his medium, this one is creative and clear.

  5. Dana says:

    This makes no sense.

  6. scott says:

    Dana, FBR, your stupid.

Not ROFL, but something to chuckle about.

    • Dana says:

No, you’re the stupid one. This makes absolutely no sense. At all. Any dullard should be able to discern that this is little more than drivel.

If you do find this muy cómico, you are either a) stoned or b) severely mentally retarded.

P.S.: For the sake of your own self-preservation, do not attempt to label other people as mentally inferior while sounding like a dimwitted buffoon. Thank you.

      • jl5691426 says:

That’s especially true if you don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re.” Bad grammar instantly nullifies claims of intellectual superiority.

      • Lol says:

        Wow… someone got trolled.

      • Anomaly says:

“P.S.: For the sake of your own self-preservation, do not attempt to label other people as mentally inferior while sounding like a dimwitted buffoon.”

        “No, you’re the stupid one.”
“If you do find this muy cómico, you are either a) stoned or b) severely mentally retarded.”

        Hmm.
Before you try to claim that you’re immune to your own criticism because you don’t “sound like a dimwitted buffoon”… that’s not really the case. Throwing your weight around as an ‘intellectual’ on a site like this one when your only credentials are long words and a snarky attitude doesn’t impress anyone but yourself, and in fact makes it look like you’re overcompensating.

As for your evaluation of the graph, it’s only half-correct. It makes no _logical_ sense, but as “any dullard” should know, logical isn’t the only kind of sense. With just a little bit of imagination, the meaning becomes clear. The one on the left is the pessimistic because it comes up from below, representing the ‘low’-ness of the half-empty estimation. The optimistic graphing on the right, of course, is the opposite. It doesn’t stand up to a literal reading at all, but it does stand up to one with imagination and, dare I expect one, a sense of humour.

      • Not First says:

there seems to be more people who understand then people who don’t.

    • Dana says:

      I apologize.

      I am stupid

    • buttercup says:

no YOU’RE stupid. and they used to call me grammar nazi in high school. not that you care but yeah. . . Sig heil!

  7. Flippy9274 says:

    Meh.

  8. P. says:

    Rather cleaver.

For those who don’t get it… Pessimists say “The glass is half empty” and Optimists say “the glass is half full” when they both see the same glass is at 50% capacity. This graph is a pretty good visual representation of this.

  9. Kaly says:

This is soooo clever! :) )) Cool!

  10. fubuki says:

    Bravo.

  11. Mike Hunt says:

This make no sense because Optimists’ bar starts from 50 and goes to 100. When technically it shoud start from 0 to 50 for both cases.
    FAIL

    • Dana says:

      Exactly!

      • gabi says:

        absolutely…

it’s also not very creative. i call it a FAIL.

        • sham83 says:

If the bars went from 0-50 in both cases the glass would – to both optimists and pessimists – appear half full. This negates the point of the ‘half full/half empty’ adage.
What the graph-maker has done (whether creatively or humourously is arbitrary) is to represent that in a visual format. What you have done is chosen to willfully misunderstand that, thereby denying yourself any chance to find even the smallest glimmer of humour from it.

GraphJam doesn’t lend itself to pedantry. Move along folks – move along.

          • enigmatick says:

Can somebody please explain to me how going from 50-100 is supposed to signify half-empty? To me, that signifies that the water in my glass is hovering in the air! This graph just doesn’t make sense, end of story. I understand what the submitter was trying to say, I just don’t think that what they did successfully conveys that meaning. And it would seem I’m not the only one out there…

    • Petrograd says:

It doesn’t start from 50 and goes to 100, it starts from 100 and goes to 50!

    • Bobsy888 says:

Yeah, but that’s the ‘joke’. Whether you find it funny or not is a different matter, and personal taste.

  12. jl5691426 says:

It make more sense if both bars started at zero but the pessimist bar went to fifty below and the optimist bar went to fifty above.

    • maestro says:

Not at all. The point is that the glass is half full. Not 0%-49% and not 51%-100%

      • jl5691426 says:

Perhaps I erred in saying that it would make sense. I realize that my suggestion wouldn’t make a scientifically valid graph, but I believe the point of this site is humor. (See title, “Fun With Charts.”) The bar’s extending below the zero line on a scale representing fullness would, in a humorous way, represent the the pessimist’s perceiving the glass as half empty.

  13. Destin says:

This is retarded. Optimists can’t comprehend a glass that is less than fifty percent full, regardless of whether or not it really is less than fifty percent full? Must suck to be either a pessimist or an optimist… being unable to comprehend things being more than/less than something that they can very possibly and clearly be.

  14. Balforg says:

I appreciate this graph, thank you for added a splash of creativity to this sites normal “blandness”, and to all the nay-Sayers…. fie on you all!

  15. Kirch says:

Unfortunately it’s true – this graph makes absolutely no sense. Though I see the intention, and it surely has potential, this execution sucked and isn’t funny.

  16. flip says:

    Best. Chart. Ever.

  17. Yer mom says:

    Nice job–very witty!

  18. Clefaria says:

By far the stupidest graph I’ve ever seen on this site.

  19. KenzoFKC says:

This graph shows that pessimists and optimists both see the glass as half full.

  20. Sakulati says:

In a strict mathematical and/or logical way this graph does not make sense, of course, as some of the other commenters have already commented. But I disagree that because it does not make sense mathematically/logically it is therefore not funny, as some seem to imply. I think the graph is cleverly conceived and actually does make perfect sense in a play on words kind of way. I personally found it much funnier than the majority of rather dull Murphys law/people-are-stupid cynical pie charts we have been seeing much too many of lately.

  21. Dexaan says:

Realist: who the F**K drank half my beer!?

  22. Waffletacular Sr. says:

    It’s clever, sort of…

but if you read the graph, it’s full of fail on so many different levels…

the graph actually implies that pessimists are the ones taking the more positive viewpoint.

  23. poop says:

    I LIKE FECES

  24. MapleMan34 says:

    thats soooooooooooooooooooooo funny i roflmao’d

  25. Deetviper says:

    Points for doing something different.

  26. observer says:

i find it interesting that approximately 50% of the commenters here think this is garbage, and 50% think it is funny and clever.

  27. womaninblack says:

I think it clearly shows that the glass is half-filled.

  28. chadhend says:

I guess it depends what the glass is half full or half empty of. Like if it were half full of tobacco spittings at room temperature collected from a room full of people with mono… Mmmmmmm, that would be heaven.

  29. Halo says:

    Optimist: Best. Chart. Ever.
    Pessimist: This makes no sense.

    This graph just keeps giving.

  30. cj says:

Boy, there are a lot of pessimist on this forum today.

  31. James says:

+10 points for creativity, -10 points for execution. You have to be an idiot to this this is funny. An intelligent person requires that the graph be functional in order to be funny. Idiots- and there are plenty here- really don’t seem to understand that the graph doesn’t describe the “half full/ half empty” saying at all.

Bur hey, if you’re an idiot, I’m sure you don’t care because your standards for humor aren’t as high. I know your type.

And on the point of grammar, no one is being a grammar Nazi. Studies show that your laziness actually causes the reader (especially those who know grammar well) to inadvertently feel as though he made the error himself. It’s a subconscious hiccup in the mind and it is justification for a complaint of frustration and annoyance.

You’re stupid and it isn’t your fault. We know that. You don’t have to tell us. But please… Don’t try to compete with us on an intellectual level. It seems like a simple request, doesn’t it?

    • James says:

Yes, I see the irony in typing “this” instead of “think”. But at least my post is not absolutely plagued with mistakes. Any difficulty someone has comprehending my post will be blamed on the reader, not me.

    • Sakulati says:

“You have to be an idiot…” No you don’t:
Why does some people always feel they MUST call other people “idiots” just because they happen to have a different opinion about something than themselves? There are three “idiot” commenters on this comment page alone. It’s just so disheartening. The funny thing is that all three commenters who use the word “idiot” about others all think very highly of themselves, but their comments clearly show that they are neither particularly clever nor blessed with even an inkling of humor.

  32. Stephen says:

I agree that it makes no sence, but am 100% certain that was the point. It breaks the rules of line graphs, and still got it’s point across, and i f**kin’ love it. I had to do one of those *shakes head* double-takes before I LOLed. Keep up the good work.

    • James says:

Your 100% certainty is 100% wrong. I applaud it for breaking the rules, hence the “+10 points” for creativity. But the graph would be even funnier if it made sense. That’s what would have made it genius. To break the rules is one thing, but to break the rules and still maintain functionality is genius.

Notice I didn’t call the person who made the graph an idiot. No need to. That person had a great idea but failed in executing that idea. That’s not a big deal. But to have someone explain to you the mistake that was made and still believe the graph works… That’s stupidity.

      Also, to Sakulati:

You think I don’t have an inkling of humor? Based on what? A couple posts I made about a joke? Since when was humor required in a post-joke analysis? That’s like saying everyone on SportsCenter is weak because they don’t tackle each other during a post-game analysis. I’d wager a large sum of money that I am funnier than you and I’d be willing to test that in front of an indifferent audience. Sure, you could say the same thing and it really doesn’t mean anything since this is the internet, but know inside— deep down inside— the funniest people in the world are some of the most intelligent, and I’d add to my wager that they wouldn’t find this graph funny either.

Keeskind, it was a noble attempt. Better luck next time.

  33. John L says:

This is one of the better graphs – RIGHT up there with the Nascar Graph – left v right turns.
It has generated about the same amount of fervour and colour*

Let’s get to the underlying isue – THE GLASS IS NIETHER HALF FULL NOR HALF EMPTY —– IT IS SIMPLY TOO BIG!
kisskind – your awesome (notice to scott – your not awesome)

*not British but love mispelling words by adding u

  34. Anonymous says:

Look at all of the haughty intellectuals trying to “prove” their intellectual superiority by “pwning” a LOL comment section. In actuality, they are common people with overinflated egos, as stupid as the ones they are chastising for stupidity.
Let’s face it: if you are here, you, sir or madam, are no great intellect. After all, you could be adding to your incomplete knowledge at the very moment that you are reading this comment, but instead U R HERE.

    • James says:

Actually, I’m here for a very good reason. I’m in Iraq and it’s a little stressful as you may imagine. Sometimes I don’t want to spend my free time reading up on my philosophy, evolutionary biology or psychology. Sometimes I like to learn about less formal topics… My family history, Photoshop, and even humor.

Even Einstein liked to laugh now and again.

    • Nash says:

When will people grasp that intelligence is not proportional to knowledge? Intelligent people have a greater ability to learn, but that doesn’t mean they have a greater desire to learn.

As for myself, I could be learning more random facts I have no use for. I just don’t see the point. If I have use of information, I look it up. Knowledge is not an end in itself.

      • James says:

True, Nash. I could spend all day discussing little tidbits I happen to know and it wouldn’t mean anything for at least two reasons. One, I could be pulling it all off Google. Two, I’d be attempting to prove knowledge, not intellect. So what can I do to prove myself? Well, I could point out the logical errors committed in the graph above, but apparently the stupid people are too busy laughing half way through the joke to realize that the punchline doesn’t actually make sense even when it has been explained to them. I suppose it would be easier to just point to my artwork, but why bother? This has already turned into a flame war so I don’t expect anything but biased negative over-exaggerated criticism. I’d rather not waste my time with that. So what else is there?

I submit that the people who understand that the joke doesn’t make sense are smarter than those that do think it makes sense. Period. If you still find it funny, fine. Maybe you’re not an “idiot”. But you can’t tell me it wouldn’t have been funnier if it had been a functional graph (while still “breaking the rules”).

  35. BW says:

all of you idiots are just like the graph says ….you are all running at half capacity…. not half full or half empty, just half capacity….in other words you are only going to 50% of your potential…..bottom dwellers.

  36. Flower says:

    This is awesome.

  37. Sheesh says:

Wow. People really like to create drama over a thing like this?
How sad. I, for one, liked it and understood what he was trying to do.
Does it really matter whether it was executed properly or not?
    Yeah. Didn’t think so.

  38. Jai says:

This is actually quite clever. It made me smile. Not particularly hilarious, or funny, but it makes sense and it’s interesting.

  39. Kelly says:

    Optimists can defy gravity, yep.

  40. failness says:

funny, the one problem with this is that pessimists dont think of the glass as 25% full, they think of it as 0%-50% emptyness

  41. Fatty says:

You guys are picky sometimes… I won’t write much because english isn’t my first language and there’s a lot of grammar nazis over here…
Good joke, graph isn’t that good.
Ps: my english sucks but even I know the difference between your and you’re and actually when you get that word wrong can make things unclear.

  42. thatperson says:

You know what I say? Just let me drink my milk.

  43. Dana says:

Wow. Your inference skills just utterly fail.

Of course I have heard of the optimist/pessimist platitude. It is the graph itself that doesn’t make sense. Any mentally impeded kindergarten-aged student would know that.

And really, one would think that you would be able to correct your error after having it pointed out to you. It’s “you’re”, not “your”. I’m not much of a stickler for grammar, but the inability to learn from your mistakes just reveals your intellectual capacity (i.e.; none).

    Good day to you, turd.

  44. scott says:

    Heil Grammar Nazi!

  45. Wylizzle says:

f**k up Dana. You’re not any better than the rest of us.
You just sound like you on the rag.

  46. Dana says:

Behold the pitiful sight of an idiot in over his head.

I must congratulate you, though, for not even attempting to make a riposte of any sort, if only to save yourself the humiliation and me the effort of tearing it down.

  47. yo says:

    Oooh ooh!!!

Ken eye uze big werdz tew?

Because I daresay, madam, that you are a sanctimonious pseudo-intellectual.

  48. BG says:

But Scott, you also preceded “not ROFL…” by calling Dana stupid. When it became clear that her issue with the graph had nothing to do with not understanding the reference (as your calling her stupid seemed to suggest) but rather had to do with the fact that it’s an incredibly poorly made graph (when you interpret the graph, the pessimist side comes out as saying 50% fullness, or half full, and the optimist side doesn’t really say anything sensible at all), you refused to accept that you were wrong to call her stupid. So don’t try to spin this as her jumping down your throat unfairly, don’t try to make it sound like she’s the one with the stick up her ass, because you’re the one who seems to enjoy calling people stupid simply for stating (correctly) that something makes no sense.

  49. Failer says:

Congratulations Scott! You managed to use the word “your” correctly 1 out of 3 times in “you’re” last post. Way to go, we knew you could do it!!!

  50. RS says:

Yeah I mostly agree with you here scott, but for cryin’ out loud, please try to spell the word “you’re” after your mistake is pointed out two times. When you don’t do that, you don’t have a lot of intellectual high ground to stand on.

  51. WhoCares says:

but Dana is stupid. Scott rules.

  52. yeah says:

Agreed. Dana you sound like a snot.

  53. Alex says:

Yeah Dana, its kind of the point of the joke. It doesnt have to make sense.

I get the impression some of you guys arent to fun at parties.

  54. scott says:

its a simple post, not a essay I have to write for a college.

I dont care if someone misspells in a post or such, just as long as they dont make it look like they are texting.

  55. cj says:

lol. I think Dana’s glass is half empty!

  56. scott says:

So in other words, I have to type proper english.

    Screw people like you.

  57. WhoCares says:

    I think I love Scott.

  58. Nunya says:

People who attack the grammer and/or spelling of people on forums are simply taking the attention off the point. In other words you cannot justify your lame post. All hail Sir Scott and his squire Whocares.

  59. Shancey says:

Really? Siding with Scott? The world has ended. It was a good run.
