See, the funny thing is that right-wingers scream “SOCIALISM” when we talk about universal healthcare, but they don’t realize that with Medicare, Medicaid, the Federal Employee Program, Tri-Care and its offshoots, and the national subsidization of the uninsured through commercial insurance premiums, we already have it – but in a costly and thoroughly inefficient way.

So… what percentage of graphs on this website would you say are not at all exaggerated to make a point? Now, granted, usually the exaggeration is for COMIC effect, not to prove a dramatic point, and one could argue that the latter is not really the point of this website, BUT the fact remains, all of these graphs are here because they exaggerated. No one actually believes that literally 60% of healthcare cost is lawsuits and less than 1% is “making people better.” It’s an exaggeration to prove a point. Lawsuits are a serious problem in the healthcare industry (in America at least). Ask any physician about their insurance costs, especially if they’ve been around for 20 years and know what they USED to be.

Including awards, legal fees, and underwriting costs, the total amount spent defending U.S. malpractice claims was an estimated $6.5 billion in 2001, or 0.46 percent of total health spending.

- The lawsuits portion is extremely exaggerated.
- Advertising is really, for the most part, confined to the pharmaceutical industry. (And it’s arguable if it can be considered more of a traditional healthcare good than an overglorified commodity).
- Lobbying, sure, but that goes with almost anything that has the proper social, political and financial backing.
- Maybe you should have included something about administrative overheard; rampant technological advancements and adoption thereof; fraud and abuse; unreasonably high specialty salaries; price discrimination overall, against the financial good of the U.S.; focus on acute, episodic care rather than preventative; the aging population, the need for chronic care and our belief that all life needs to be saved at whatever cost; etc.

Then again, this graph doesn’t even belong on GraphJam. Neither does my rant. Fail graph makes me sad.
