Uh. . . Wow. I came here thinking this was a joke website. What are all of you doing here? Why are we sitting around, with apparently way too much free time we could be using debating these topics with people who actually care, arguing about the political correctness of a clearly racist joke?

It’s also the only religious holiday that doubles as a federal holiday, try to understand why some of us Jews (and other non-Christians) bristle at that.

And if you don’t get the bagel thing you clearly don’t live in a heavily Jewish-populated area.

wow – and i thought the real point of the “season” (regardless of ANY religion) was peace within ourselves ……and throughout the world – what a thread –
its a big wide world out there…..
(I’ve lived many places in our world – and now live in a small rural town where there are very few jews – I am a jew with pagan tendencies)
I wish you all a peaceful season full of wonder……and an experience that teaches you some things just don’t matter, and some people are just trying to be kind the best way they know how or how they were taught…..

“Holiday

Holiday is a contraction of holy and day, holidays originally represented special religious days. This word has evolved in general usage to mean any extra special day of rest (as opposed to regular days of rest such as the weekend). Countrywide Holidays stands for when everybody plans for holidays or a break. Under many belief systems, days of rest are necessary for ritual or spiritual rejuvenation.

Holy days originated in the Bible as 7 annual Holy Days the Jews or children of Israel were commanded to keep as instructed by Moses (who received it from the Lord or Yahweh (the Eternal One)). Outlined in Leviticus 23 are the 7 annual Holy Days that were to be kept. The word holi-day has replaced “Holy-Day” in today’s English.”

Considering some of the arguments and what not centered around Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays I have to giggles when I read this as there’s still a little bit of religion in in the whole thing no matter what. ^_^ And like it matters. =) Most everyone enjoys this time of year, so what difference does it make if you think of it in terms of secular or spiritual? It’s all the same thing and it’s still a religious holy day… I mean holiday. ;D

i agree with Cecona you don’t have to believe in god to love christmas to have fun, like for instance he doesn’t and i do and its stupid to think that your going to get sued for acknowledging god on a holiday thats FOR God and i really don’t get the bagel and Merry Christmas

it’s not even a binary discussion: religious groups other than christians and jews exist and indeed thrive in america. and some of us are frankly allergic to the rest of y’all’s in-your-face approach to your own religion.

You could solve the problem entirely by not telling people you’ve never met to enjoy your religious holiday, which they may or may not observe. It’s not “offensive” per se; it just reveals the egocentrism of the person saying it. Why can’t you just say “have a nice day” like you would any other time of year?

Yeah, screw that whole “peace on earth” and good will stuff, let’s all get either hypersensitive or insensitive. It doesn’t matter what they say, it’s the friendliness that counts.

If someone says “Merry Christmas” I say it back. Same goes for “Happy Holidays” or the rare “Happy Chanukkah” (to which I reply “Achim!”). Tolerance goes both ways.

I’m always afraid that will happen. I generally say “Happy Holidays.” Although I could always change that to, “I hope you have a happy holiday irregardless of your religious persuasion, if any,* although I’m aware this makes me worse than Hitler.”
