  1. xxxxxxx-head says:

    i’d say first….but I don’t care.

  2. fubuki says:

Rename the categories to “Amount I Learned” and “Amount I Use” and you may have something.

  3. Rey says:

    alas, so true…

  4. rockntrumpet says:

Wow, this is exactly what I was feeling today as I contemplate telling my advisor that all the research I’ve done up to this point is garbage, and yet I’m supposed to graduate in 3 months….

  5. Mic says:

What is the graph author studying? It sure doesn’t seem universal that every graduate student is burnt out and apathetic by the time they finish their degree. Maybe they need a new field?

    • Steph says:

I’m in grad school, and love the field I’m in, however, 6 months away from graduation I find I no longer care about any of it because I’ve been inundated with the same crap for the last year and a half. I think it’s more about not caring about the school and learning than it is not caring about the field you’re in, but that’s just my take on the graph.

    • MS says:

Obviously you’ve never been a graduate student. 95% of your Grad schooling is your unique research project (or its equivalent, such as internship). The last 5% (usually towards the end) consists of a bunch of courses about things you already know/have experienced. In my case, it turned out that a majority of my classes were cross-listed with higher level undergrad classes that I already took. Which, for me, makes this chart 100% correct.

      • Diane says:

For my department, the 5% of classes are at the beginning. Didn’t make a difference for me, I’m still living this chart completely. I don’t care, I don’t care, I don’t care, just get me out of here already. And I’m not nearly as close as Steph and rockntrumpet, the lucky bastards….

      • Mic says:

Assumption fail!!! I’m getting ready to write my dissertation and as each month goes by, I enjoy being a student more and more.

  6. Amelia says:

Clearly, this person isn’t in grad school.

  7. Mike says:

    So true…so true.

  8. Rob says:

Shift the amount I care curve over high school and you’ve got reality. I stopped caring in grad school and college.

  9. bozo says:

replace ‘grad school’ with ‘real life job’ and it’ll be exactly my life… :/

  10. jordi says:

    This graph is my life…!

  11. believer says:

‘Verily in the name of God do hearts find peace.’

seems like some people may need this?
    discuss :o

  12. EdwardC says:

Actually, in my case, I think it would be more closely represented by an inversely proportional relationship.

  13. Reno says:

Make the red line flat at zero across the graph = my life.

  14. Guess Again says:

Obviously this person is studying the wrong thing in grad school…maybe they should have gotten a job in the real world right after their BA/BS…
