That all depends on what you are doing. I’ve done quite a few renovations requiring complicated geometry. You’ve obviously never done any real plumbing work. Algebra is also used extensively in those areas, again depending on what you are doing.

The pyramids were built thousands of years ago, before Euclidean geometry was even a concept (Euclidean geometry dates to the third century BC). One of them was the tallest structure in the world until the Eiffel Tower was built. You don’t really need to know anything about geometry to have appreciated the pyramids themselves, or what they represent.

Capital letters, on the other hand, are a far simpler concept I learned when I was 4. I learned how to type them on a keyboard when I was around 6. You should try using them sometime. Typing a whole resume with proper capitalization will go much further in helping you get a job than geometry. That is, unless you are looking to build a spaceship to go to the moon.

My child is in middle school (8th grade) and she has had some portion of Geometry in her math classes since the 5th grade. Of, course she is in all advanced classes and tests well above the national average in math and science. Not that I’m bragging or anything.

high school geometry focusses exclusively about basic shapes. lines, angles, vertices; the fundamental forms from which all euclidean shapes, e.g. triangles, are constructed.

one may as well ask “what is the purpose of studying literature, as i will never need to quote any in order to survive” but what a dull life it would be if one were only born to survive.

think about the pyramids, the pantheon and the apollo missions. without euclidean geometry, none of these would have been even remotely possible.

I teach math to 6th graders and geometry is part of the curriculum. It’s not bisecting lines and angles as much as it is shapes and volume, but it’s still geometry. And we offer a 7/8 grade course on it as well.

You do not need geometry to work in the medical field. My wife does not need it to manager her bank branch.

And for Justin, who posted below, I took geometry in 8th grade, which is middle school. Perhaps his school was not as difficult as it needed to be (the fact that he pluralized “4/5″ shows that he was not in the advanced class at least).

i guess if your life’s ambition is to work at Chuck E. Cheese, then no, algebra and geometry will not help. If you plan to work in the finance field, engineering, carpentry, etc. then you may want to take some notes. jmo.

If you like a subject, mastering it teaches you the subject. If you do not like a subject, mastering it teaches you the subject AND self-discipline. The memory of the subject may fade away, but self-discipline will improve your life always.

Besides, geometry will probably be more useful than you think. I have, in fact, had to determine the bisector of an angle multiple times in my life.
