Well in 1600, if it did start “raining” cats and dogs then it meant it was raining alot because where the animals including birds as well, would sleep in the thatching on the roofs, when it rained alot they would fall off the roof so… they would appear to “rain” down… but do love the pun
The raining cats and dogs statement isn’t absurd for the historical context. In England houses were close together. Cats and dogs would go out on the roof. They could walk from roof to roof because of how close they are. When it would rain really hard the roofs would get slippery and the cats and dogs would slip off. The statement “raining cats and dogs” is a reference to how hard it has to be raining (which is hard) to get them to fall of the the roofs.
