To be fair, the female bites the head off the male to initiate sex. It’s afterwards that she eats him.
Yup. By removing the head pre/peri intercourse, the motor control that is regulated by the brain is cut off (haha) and therefore allows the remaining ganglia, which allow instinctual reactions, to occur. A decapitated male praying mantid is actually more effective at mating, than one with a head.
And what is really amazing is that less than 75% of praying mantids actually display this behavior that people erroneously keep propagating because they are morons (the people not the mantids).
And how do you guys know this?
