Good idea, bad execution
Agreed. If there’s a venn diagram, one really ought to put something in the middle.
Also, Since when does “us” rhyme with “texas”?
I don’t think respects us and protects us rhyme with Texas…
Well I believe that Texas has to be pronounced “TekSUS”, but it still works I suppose. Oh and the emptiness in the Venn Diagram overlap is exactly the point of the joke.
I was wondering if it was the point of the joke, but I’d never listened to the song (that I know of – I don’t recognize the title) and being at work I can’t really listen to the youtube.
I dunno why people think Texas is pronounced Teksus (It’s pronounced closer to ‘Teksiss’), but alrighty…
Probably depends on your specific dialect. Here in the prairie provinces of Canada we use a schwa in Texas, so hexes, sexes, flexes, nexus, and lexus all work. “Respects us” and “protects us” are pretty iffy. YMMV.
but if the point of the joke is that nothing in the song actually rhymes with texas the circles should not overlap at all
Don’t forget Bowling for Soup’s horrible attempt at “breastes.”
100% agree with Jones.
TekSUS and duh, thats the point. Couldn’t have said it any other way.
Properly, Texas is pronounced Teh-Hass.
no. tejas is pronounced Teh-hass. ENGLISH MO-FO, DO YOU SPEAK IT?!?
The Tejas is more the Mexican pronunciation so your question should actually read: “SPANISH MO-FO, DO YOU SPEAK IT?!?”
Plus, rhymes do not need to be exact, if I remember my high school English class. As long as they sound similar enough, it is considered a rhyme.
Or Tex ASS.
I think it’s right on the money. Steve Miller doesn’t put anything that actually rhymes with Texas in the song, but he still put it in (and by putting it in, he thinks it rhymes).
Lol, this reminds me of the song ‘Where I Come From’ by Alan Jackson. Somehow, somewhere, somebody thought that the word ‘Ventura’ rhymed with the word ‘finger’.
People in Texas pronounce it as texUS.
I prononce it Teh-Hass cause it sounds cool and because Im not actually from Teh-Hass so I can get away with it.
