and, also being in that faithful 11-14 category, I’ve got to agree. I consciously use correct spelling and grammar (I don’t capitalise, but I don’t think that’s necessary on an online forum). I do use abbreviations like imo, ftr, jsyk, tyvm and such, though.

I’m 17 and I use a few of the more common contractions. It’s pretty annoying though when people spell badly or use incorrect grammar because they think it’s cool, or when they skip punctuation out of laziness. Anyways, I think things like pwn, noob and even lolcats are starting to get old now, so now we can just wonder what it’ll be next.

It truly doesn’t matter. Every generation has had their own lingo. This too will pass. The english language has been changed with every new generation as a way to define who they are and to obfuscate their language from adults. This particular generation has been defined by a culture which is attempting to do everything that the main stream would consider outrageous. By trying to set themselves apart from other cultures they have identified with these children and thus they themselves have become the main stream. Ie, the JC Pennys ad which spoke of getting your girlfriend more “bling”. I grew up in the late 80′s / early 90′s and we had our own peculiarities that defined us. Of course most of us were able to fill out a job or college application without having to spend hours thinking about the proper spelling. Oh well, more jobs for those of us who can use the language properly.

I’m 14 and am one of the few who use proper spelling and grammer. Almost everybody abbreviates ‘you’ to ‘u’ and ‘are’ to ‘r’ but a very small percentage actually do the whole ‘i am teh l337 pwnster i own teh hole intawebz!!!!11one!111!!!eleven!!1′ act. Lots use initials like ‘lol’ ‘lmao’ ‘rofl’ ‘ift’ but not ones like ‘ftw’ which is considered immature and ‘noobish’ (They do not use the last word). However I don’t know what ‘pron’ means. Can somebody help me out?

I’m also guilty of using proper grammar and spelling in text messages and e-mails and I’m 22 as well. Hell, I even do it in IMs. However, I like to actually speak like that sometimes. That’s it, though.

I’m 60 and some of my favorite sites are Cheezburger, HotDog and Cute Overload. These days when I’m writing words that end in “s,” I need to try hard to remember to not spell it with a “z” on the end. In high school (back in the Dark Ages), we had signs in every room that said “Say it in Good English.” Many of them had been cut and pasted to read “Say it in Goolish.”

I’m 22 and I can’t even bring myself to use shortened words (e.g. “u” instead of “you”) in text messages.
If I’m writing an email, I have to remind myself that it is acceptable to use contractions.
I remember briefly using some of these words though when I was a teenager and IMed a lot, though.

Yeah, those kids of today. Why, when I was their age, I was out chopping wood at the crack of dawn, and then I walked 30 miles to school. You can be sure WE didn’t have these damned electronic gizmos. And everyone knew how to spell. If you missed a word, the teacher would beat you till blood came out your ears. I lost my little brother in a spelling bee that way.
