I did always wonder. I knew it couldn’t be anything good… Now I will be examining the lyrics backwards looking for the clues I missed before.

Don’t be so judgemental – middle America knew what that song was about – how could you miss it – it wasn’t even really just spelled out thematically, it was spelled out fairly literally…
Ben Fold’s once did a sarcastic interview where he said it was about putting a dog to sleep. It fits if you listen too. But, yeah, it’s about abortion.
Maybe make it say “Sorry LA and NY, but not everyone loves killin babies”
oh please, go become an hero.
My husband used to love this song til’ I told him what it was about. He got pissed and went all emo after that.
This song came out I was still in elementary school, so I didn’t quite understand what it was about, because well, I didn’t know anything about abortion yet. I just knew it was a very beautiful and sad song. When I heard it again as a teenager after a few years it dawned on me, “HOLY SHIT!” And it just made me like the song so much more because it’s very poignant. It bothers me to think that when people would interview them they’d ask “So which one of your girlfriends had the abortion?” And because of that kind of shit Ben Folds no longer plays such an amazing song in concerts.
So, wait? People voluntarily listen to Ben Folds…? Well, I suppose I can see how he caters for people who don’t really like music at all. People like that still have money, so why not?
Its a great song, regardless.
